Quarterback Chad Kanoff of Harvard-Westlake HS in Hollywood (Calif.) picked up an offer from San Diego State on Thursday.
The 6-foot-4 and 195-pound football player demonstrates the whole package as a QB.
"I wouldn't call myself a true dual-threat," Kanoff said. "I consider myself a pocket passer but I can run and do a zone option. We run the spread in school. I like doing it; it's a lot of fun. Always kind of involved in the run game and you're not just handing the ball off, constantly involved in doing stuff and I like doing that."
In his junior year campaign, Kanoff threw for 2,646 yards with 28 touchdowns and only 5 interceptions. He also ran 129 yards and 3 touchdowns.
"I felt I had a pretty good year," Kanoff said. "It was our first year playing spread with our new offensive coordinator, pro-style. It was kind of a tough adjustment but felt I did pretty well. I really like running so many plays a game."
Harvard-Westlake ran a spread option, pro-style offense; that was mostly run out of the no-huddle throughout the season.
The skilled signal caller is continuing to work this spring and summer on his game, as he gets ready for his senior season.
"I'm trying to improve on my footwork, it's my main thing," Kanoff said. "I had some footwork issues and then using my legs more when I throw, that goes back to my footwork because I think I can get more velocity on the ball. That's really important, my main thing I'm working on."
"My quarterback at school has been drilling me on it," Kanoff said. "Will work on it during defensive drills and do like footwork drills he's come up with and throwing some routes."
With the amount of work Kanoff and his team has put in so far this spring, the field general is looking to improve on Harvard-Westlake's .500 season (5-5) last year.
"We have 10 starters coming back on offense so we are pretty confident," Kanoff said. "I think we can be pretty good. I don't think we have a set number [of wins], just want to make playoffs and go as far as we can."
The 3-star quarterback is excited about the opportunity of playing collegiately and should make an impact wherever he lands.
"I think I would come in right away and compete, get as high on the depth chart as I possibly could," Kanoff said. "I would work hard and motivate my teammates. I consider myself a pretty hard worker."
As of recruiting, how did it feel to pull in that San Diego State offer?
"It felt great," Kanoff said. "It's awesome, in-state school in San Diego. Awesome place to live in."
"I know they run the spread," Kanoff said. "It's my quarterbacks coaches dream school so he was pretty fired up."
SDSU offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig is the lead recruiter for Kanoff. The QB hasn't talked to the Aztecs since the offer but expects Ludwig to visit soon. While visiting Harvard-Westlake last week, SDSU discovered offensive lineman Thomas Oser and offered the talented teammate a few days later.
Kanoff has also grabbed an offer from Vanderbilt, an SEC school. He has been hearing lately from Duke, Colorado, Oklahoma State and Washington.
What does a university need to land the Hollywood pocket passer?
"I'm just trying to find the best fit for me and that's athletically, for my family and academically," Kanoff said.
"I'm not super rigid on one thing," Kanoff said. "I'm trying to take in everything and make a educated decision."
Kanoff has no visits planned but hopes to make it out to San Diego State at sometime soon. He hopes to decide on a school before his senior season.
