West Jefferson and three-star WR Ronald Lewis nearly upset highly-touted tourney favorite "Louisiana Bootleggers Elite" in the finals of the Big Man On Campus 7-on-7 fray held on the West Bank of New Orleans at Behrman Stadium. What's happening with Lewis? What's going on around the state from LSU to McNeese State recruiting?
West Jefferson nearly knocked off Louisiana Bootleggers Elite, but the Buccaneers squandered a two-touchdown lead to the all-star squad that included LSU commits Jeryl Brazil (Loranger HS), John Diarse (Neville) and Tre'Davious White (Green Oaks). The Bootleggers Elite squad also featured three-star WR Shelby Christy from Dutchtown HS. Three-star West Jeff WR Ronald Lewis (pictured below, left, with teammate Devin Scott, right), said Baylor, Texas A&M and TCU are three programs that are currently standing out. His coaching staff says to watch out for Arizona State - if the Sun Devils are able to get a visit from Lewis.
The University of Miami signed three-star DL Jacoby Briscoe out of 5A state runner-up Carencro earlier this year, and the Hurricanes have a current commitment from four-star TE Standish Dobard of 4A state runner-up Edna Karr (Algiers). Three-star John Curtis Christian LB Duke Riley is looking to add an offer from the "U" to his collection, which is nearing double digits. The Miami staff was reviewing Riley's junior film - last we heard.
Curtis center Brandon Godfrey also was offered by Memphis this week. Tulane leads for both Godfrey and teammate Badie, and the Green Wave has offered both. Tulane head coach Curtis Johnson would like to secure commitments from the pair of local prospects, in addition to Riley, prior to the start of the regular season.
The Noel Ellis camp reports several new offers, although there's no reported change in his top three, which was recently revealed to consist of Tennessee, Auburn and Texas A&M. FoxSportsNext/Scout.com was informed that Ellis has added offers from Arizona State, Southern Miss, Illinois, Indiana and SMU.
Darian Claiborne, the four-star LB (and starting QB) at 3A Port Allen, looked good at the BMOC 7-on-7 last weekend in New Orleans. Texas A&M remains the favorite, while many LSU fans believe that Claiborne should get an offer from the local program. Claiborne (pictured, bottom) is unsure if he'll camp with the Tigers, but it's more than likely to happen, in my opinion.
Tre'Davious White, another prospect mentioned above, was a big riser in the recent FoxSportsNext/Scout.com rankings re-shuffle. White didn't add a star (remained a three-star) but increased his stock by moving up several spots among CBs nationwide. He was stellar and got as much praise as anyone at the talent-laden BMOC 7-on-7 event, which included St. Augustine and '14 superstar RB (and LB?) Leonard Fournette.
The Louisiana Bootleggers team, which was directed at QB by Texan Shane McCarley ('13 prospect from 4A power Manvel HS), will add four-star TE Desean Smith and four-star S Jeremy Cutrer for nationals. Smith (from 5A Barbe) is uncommitted, while Cutrer (from 3A Jewel Sumner) would be the fourth LSU pledge to join the team. Claiborne also stars on the squad.
The coaching rumor mill is saying that 5A Westgate head coach Brian Fine resigned Wednesday to take a position at a north Louisiana program. Fine served previous stints at northeast Louisiana programs Farmerville and West Ouachita. He won a state championship at Farmerville. Fine's Westgate squads were known for turning in on in the postseason. The Tigers reached the semifinals on multiple occasions under Fine. LSU commit Josh Boutte, a '13 OL/DL, attends Westgate. The current frontrunner for the job, according to what we were told, is Carencro High School head coach Brent Indest, who is a New Iberia native. Indest took Carencro to the 5A state finals last year, and his Bears opened the 2011 season as our preseason No. 1 in 5A. This news was received too late last night to contact Indest and/or Fine. We will keep you posted with updates on this situation.
'13 TE Deondre Skinner, an Arkansas commit ranked No. 19 nationwide at his position, added an Arizona State offer. Skinner re-professed his allegiance to the Razorbacks, who also hold a verbal pledge from Louisiana RB Kaleb Blanchard of 5A Denham Springs HS. Skinner is a three-star prospect. If he has a big year on the field this fall, that could open doors for Patterson '13 QB Denzel Johnson, who has been biding his time waiting for Justice Jones (Texas Southern signee) to graduate. Johnson is a good-enough athlete that he started last year as a DE on a team that went 9-0 during the regular season.
Memphis also offered Brother Martin OL Ryan Hoefeld, who plays OT but will move down to C in college. Hoefeld is the No. 18 center in the nation and has several offers, including his first BCS offer, which came over the weekend from Minnesota.
'13 WR Donald Gage, a Houston commit, is transferring from Class 2A Redemptorist in north Baton Rouge to 5A Zachary High School. Gage is immediately eligible, since he was previously attending a private school and is now moving to the public school in his attendance zone. He'll be teammates with sleeper '13 LB Larry Cage and '13 OL Chris Taylor.
Tulane upped its commitment total to two when Helen Cox DE Eldridge Washington pledged his services to the Green Wave. Washington has not been available for comment. He joins '12 LB Royce LaFrance, a Tulane signee in this year's recruiting class who graduated from Cox on the West Bank.
St. Michael QB Brandon Fields has a well-known father: Cleo Fields, a veteran politician. Fields also holds a Southern offer and says Tulane or Washington State could be next.
Ruston DB Devin Price is a '13 prospect who will try to step up and ease the loss of '12 DBs Cyril Noland and Kentrell Brice. Noland, Brice and Price led Ruston to the 5A quarterfinals last year. The Bearcats got a nice transfer in '13 QB C.J. Gatlin, who moves up from 4A Alexandria Senior High in the central portion of the state. Gatlin won't get to throw to ASH stud WR Shaan Washington any longer, but he'll find solace tossing the ball to athletic '13 TE John David Moore, who put on a nice display at this year's National Underclassmen Combine 5-Star Showcase.
The staff at north Louisiana 2A power Calvary Baptist says Tulane might offer '13 S/QB Weston Steelhammer this morning (Thurs.). We'll keep you posted on what we're hearing. Calvary Baptist is coming off back-to-back deep playoff runs in a classification that has been dominated in recent years by John Curtis and Evangel Christian.
