North Miami standout Troy McCollum just finished with a very productive spring, trying to hone his skills.
"My spring went great sir, it really went awesome," said McCollum. "I worked a lot on playing man to man, and also playing around with different coverage's to get in the quarterback and receivers heads."
The 6-foot-1, 165 pound prospect put his name on the map after a strong junior season, finishing with 49 tackles, one interception, and two caused fumbles.
"My best assets are my speed, run support, my height and reach. Also my ability to shut down one side of the field, and understanding the game in critical situations," said McCollum. "I still want to work on my strength, ball awareness, and my overall quickness."
Things have also been picking up on the recruiting front as college coaches have been coming by and extending offers.
"Recruiting is really going great," said McCollum. "I currently hold 15 offers and a lot of others are showing interest."
McCollum 15 offers include, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Indiana, Illinois, USF, Bowling Green, UCF, Buffalo, FIU, Marshall, WKU, South Alabama, Utah State, Western Michigan. He also thinks a few are close.
"I'm also waiting on a few schools, West Virginia, FSU and Miami," said McCollum. "They're waiting to make a decision during the season."
Last week the North Miami prospect picked up several offers including one from South Florida.
USF offered me last week," said McCollum. "It felt great to get that offer. They have a good secondary. I'm doing my research now to learn more about them ".
McCollum is being recruited by USF Coach Larry Scott, who after watching him extended an offer.
"Coach Scott said he likes me a as both a player, an athlete and as a person," said McCollum. "He seems like a very nice coach, very humble and great to talk with."
The standout defensive back has never been to USF before but would like to make a summer visit.
"No sir I never been there before but they invited me to their elite camp which is only for kids they really like in June," said McCollum. "I'm going to try and make that."
With school out for the summer, McCollum plans on being busy participating in team camps.
"I attended Al Golden's camp June 3rd," said McCollum. "I got FIU's camp June 17th, FSU's camp June 13-15th. I'm going to try and make USF's camp after that."
McCollum didn't name a leader but said that several schools are standing out and when he plans on making a decision.
"Mississippi, FIU, UCF, Illinois and Miami," said McCollum. "But I'm leaving my options open right now as I do my research. I'll probably make my choice sometime during the season."
