Ragin' Cajuns Camp Review

Over the last two weekends the UL Football staff has entertained a number of top college prospects at their "Senior Prospect Camp" and the "Ragin' Cajun 7 on 7 Shootout" team camp this past weekend. What are the top names to attend UL camps over the past week?

The Ragin' Cajuns June camp schedule finished with a flurry with some of the top athletes in the region visiting campus in Lafayette for the "Senior Prospect Camp" on June 9th or the "Ragin' Cajuns 7 on 7 Shootout " teams camp on June 16th. Here is a breakdown of some of the top athletes and the positions they play in high school.

On the offensive side of the football, the Cajuns entertained some quality arms at the quarterback position at both camps. Local talents Brandon Bergeron (6'2, 195) of St. Thomas More and Joe Lissard (6'2, 200) from Catholic-New Iberia both threw the ball well. Lissard threw for over 3,142 yards and 39 touchdowns as a junior. Bergeron's number weren't as impressive because he shared some time behind center with athlete Matt Flores, but he managed to have some big games against playoff teams Westgate and Evangel Christian during the season. He threw for 267 yards against Westgate and 275 yards and four touchdowns against Evangel.

Class 4A Division power Manvel High, Texas gun slinger Shane McCarley (6'1, 205) threw for over nearly 2,000 yards passing with 23 touchdowns vs. only three picks. He also ran for 14 touchdowns and averaged nearly five yards per carry (82-407). Doesn't hurt to that he is throwing to weapons like #96 WR Austin Bennett (6'0, 180), #50 WR Kyrion Parker (6'3, 185) and speedster Carlos Thompson (5'9, 173). McCarley threw the ball really well at the 7 on 7 camp as he led his team to a undefeated tournament. Archbishop Rummel Damian Williams (6'0, 210) is a special athlete that plays the quarterback position. Williams is considered short by BCS standards, but the Cajuns have offered him at quarterback while others have offered him as an athlete. Williams led Rummel to the 5A playoff quarter finals last season.

Besides the group of talented receivers from Manvel, Justin Morgan (6'3, 202) from Senatobia High, Ms. , Orien Dailey (6'2, 196) Grenada High,Ms. , #6 TE prospect Standish Dobard (6'5, 230) Edna Karr ,La. Cethan Carter (6'3, 240) Rummel High,La. , #19 TE Deondre Skinner (6'3, 230) Patterson High,La. , Devin Scott (5'11, 180) West Jefferson High, La. , Tyre'oune Holmes (5'10, 160) Tylertown High, Ms and local standout Jermaine Antoine (6'0, 185) Loreauville High, La. All visited campus this past week.

Two running backs that really impressed at UL camps were Tevin Horton (5'10, 190) John Curtis High,La. and Chris Jones (5'10, 180) Tylertown High, Ms. Both athletes ran well and caught the ball out of the backfield well enough to show they could play in the Cajuns spread offense.

A good group of offensive linemen made the trip down to UL camps with a hand full putting in impressive performances. Big Kenneth Santa Marina (6'5.5, 320) McDonogh #35 Scout #18 OG, D'Aquin Winthrow (6'5, 275) West Jefferson Scout # 113 OT, Ryan Holfeld (6'2, 260) Brother Martin Scout #21 Center, Grant Horst (6'5, 240) Spanish Fort High, Ala. and Cameron Tom (6'3, 288) Catholic-Baton Rouge all performed well enough to garner attention from the UL staff.

The talent was not lacking on the defensive side of the football at the two UL camps last week. Evangel Christian X'Zavier Preston (5'11, 225) Scout #58 MLB show good size and quickness at linebacker along with Acadiana High's Claude George (6'1, 220), Belle Chasse High's Quinlan Carroll (6'1, 215) and Evangel Christian's Tammerio Gross (6'2, 210).

Good defensive linemen are hard to find, but few did come in to visit UL's camp. Scotlandville High DL Tenzel Smart (6'1, 310), Dutchtown High DL David Elias (6'2, 250), Farmerville High DL Dequan Andrews (6'3, 268) and St. Amant High DL Nicholas Bickham (6'4, 235) all showed good quickness and strength.

A number of good defensive backs hit the UL camp during last week's camps and it was hard to single out more than a few because of good performances by a number of athletes. Two big names lived up to their pre-camp hype in Edna Karr's Noel Ellis (5'10, 175) Scout.com #25 CB and Manvel High's Tavares Garner (6'0, 170) Scout.com #66 CB in the country. Both showed great jump on the ball and speed. McDonogh #35 High CB Carlos Henderson (5'10, 170) and John Curtis High CB Richard Allen (5'10, 170) turned in great performances as well. Local product Orlando Calhoun (5'11, 196) showed off his speed and coverage speed during one-on-one drills.

Overall there were a number of athletes that play both sides of the ball in high school that could have made this list, but in the interest of highlighting some of the top performances at UL's camp over the week, we narrowed the list down to these athletes.
