Sterling Korona talks decision

Sterling Korona has continually been on the Duke radar throughout the Spring. On Monday afternoon he cemented that status with a verbal commitment to the Blue Devils. On Tuesday he spoke with TDD about that decision.

"Ultimately my decision to commit was a combination of many things," said San Antonio (Tex.) Reagan offensive lineman Sterling Korona. "Coach Cutcliffe, Coach Latina and Coach Roper are fantastic people.  I think that Duke is going to do some great things in the upcoming years and I want to be a part of that."

Of course it's not just the chance to joining a rising program that hooked this big Texan.

"Duke University is one of the greatest Universities in the world and it just seemed like the best fit for me and my family.  It was an extremely tough decision. During the recruiting process I was exposed to some of the greatest coaches in college football.  It was like a dream.  I could have chosen several of the schools that offered me and it would have been a good decision, I tried not to think of it as what program was better, and I believe Duke is the best place for me.

So when did Korona come to that decision? It took a while, and a few visits to make the journey.

"It was more of a process then a specific time and, frankly, I had decided a week earlier but I wanted to make sure.  I took some time and just thought about where would I go to school if i wasn't playing football.  I talked to my family about it and on Fathers Day I decided I was going to make the call and commit. I called first thing Monday morning after my morning workout."

On the other end of that phone call was Blue Devil head coach David Cutcliffe.

"I called Coach Cutcliffe when he was in a coaches meeting.  I told him my intentions of playing at Duke and he put me on speaker phone and all the coaches welcomed me.  There was some cheering and it made me feel like I had made the right decision."
