Baylor received some good news Wednesday night, as Xavier Phillips committed to the Bears. He is the 13th overall commitment for the Bears in a defensive heavy class so far with 8 defensive commitments.
With offers from Wake Forest, Duke and Tulane, academics were a major consideration for Phillips. "I chose Baylor because of academics and football."
Phillips joins D.J. Green and Travon Blanchard at the linebacker position, with Green projecting more as a middle linebacker and Blanchard projected to fill the nickel back position. Phillips will fill the outside linebacker position, but could have the frame to grow into a defensive end, though the Baylor staff projects him more as a linebacker.
The Conference Player of the Year was recruited by Baylor's linebacker coach. "Coach Gush recruited me and at camp he just seemed really enthusiastic and into what he was doing."
Phillips had offers Georgia Tech, Vanderbilt, UCF, Air Force and Navy among others.
