Jamal Lucas talks decision

Jamal Lucas, linebacker from Hoover High School in Ala., made his decision this week. Lucas talked about his commitment to Southern Miss.

"I committed yesterday," said Jamal Lucas. "I didn't want to wait too long. I just didn't want to wait. That's why I made my decision.

"I haven't been down there yet. I am going down for the camp in a few weeks. I'll get to see the facilities. I'll also get to meet the coaching staff and players. I am excited about that.

"I called coach Costantini. I told him I was looking for a home. I told him i was looking to commit. He thought I was playing with him. He told me I made his day. He thinks I made a great decision. He was really happy."

Lucas is impressed with the Southern Miss program.

"They win ball games," he said. "You know Mississippi State was recruiting me also, but history tells you something. They always have a rock solid defense, but they don't win games.

"Southern Miss wins games. They go to bowl games. Hopefully I can go there and better myself as a player. Hopefully I can improve as an athlete and get to the NFL."

Lucas has known Southern Miss linebackers coach Tommy West for a long time.

"The coaches at Southern Miss are really cool," he said. "I used to live in Memphis. I would go out to practices and games to watch DeAngelo Williams. That was when Tommy West was the coach. He remembers me. We have a background."

The 6-0, 210-pound prospect was recruited to play outside linebacker. He does not plan to take any other visits.

"I feel great," he said. "I can relax now. I can go through the school year relaxed. Recruiting was really stressful. It lifted the weight off my shoulders."
