Q&A with 2013 prospect Christian Cole

LB Christian Cole hopes he made an impression on the Terps at camp.

Christian Cole, a 6-foot-1, 215-pound linebacker from Pomfret, Md., only holds offers from Howard and Buffalo, but is hoping that he will add more offers over the summer after attending different schools' camps, including one held at College Park, Md.

Last year, Cole had 77 tackles, seven forced fumbles and nine and a half sacks in his junior season playing for the Maurice J. McDonough High Rams.

How is the off-season going?

“It's going good so far. I've been at my school working out and weight training. We've been good. It's the summer portion now instead of the spring so we're starting to really pick things up. And camps so far, I went to Towson's travel camp, I went to N.C. State on Friday (June 8) and Delaware on Saturday (June 10) and I got Maryland this past Sunday (June 17).”

What have you been working on most in terms of your game to prepare for your senior season?

“I've been working on my hips and my sideline to sideline speed.”

Have you taken any unofficial visits?

“Back during spring break, I went to Rutgers, Maryland, Delaware, Villanova and that's it so far.”

What kind of contact have you had with Maryland since the recruiting process started for you?

“I haven't really talked to them much before.”

What is your overall interest level in Maryland?

“Well, if I had to rate it from 1 to 10, but I'd have to say about a 5. I haven't really talked to them, but it's right here. It's close to home.”

Living so close to College Park, did you get to go to a lot of games last year? Were you able to watch any games?

“No, I didn't go to any games last year. But I watched the Miami game and some of the Towson game.”

What is it that you like about the Terps?

“Their uniforms. They're nice for being Under Armour. I'm usually a Nike person so I like Nike, but for Under Armour, they've got some nice uniforms.”

What linebacker position are you most comfortable playing?

“Inside. At my school, we run a 4-2-5 defense, so I'm basically just sitting in that A gap.”

What's your strength in a 4-2-5 defense?

“Blitzing, getting downhill, reading the guards, tackles, run destruction and block destruction.”

The Terps ran a base 4-3 defense last year. Do you see yourself fitting into that defensive scheme?

“If I learn the position, I can play basically anywhere.”

What is your summer schedule in terms of camps, showcases, 7 on 7's and college visits? You said you were going to Maryland's camp, are there other appearances planned?

“I know I'm visiting Buffalo sometime and I'm going to try to go to Old Dominion's camp. And so far, I don't know what else.”

Is distance a factor for you in your college choice? Would you rather be closer or farther away?

“I just want to stay on the East Coast. I kind of want to stay closer to home.”

How would you describe yourself as a player? Is there a player at the college or professional level that you try to pattern your game after or look up to?

“There isn't really anybody that I try to base my game on, but I'd say I'm a physical linebacker. I blitz good, I read the angles good. I just feel I'm a dominant linebacker.”

What are you looking for in a program?

“I'm looking for a scheme that I can fit into, nice academic support and a nice place, a nice landscape. Somewhere that I can just fit in and adapt to easily.”
