Michigan State nabs dual sport threat

Michigan State has a pledge in 2014, though Tom Izzo will have to share talented athlete Drake Harris with the football team.

Four-star class of 2014 shooting guard Drake Harris of Grand Rapids (Mich.) Christian has ended his recruitment. The 6-foot-3 slashing guard who thrives on athleticism found the place for him early, and now will bring his dual sport talents to the Big Ten.

In the past Tom Izzo has had some success with a dual sport athlete in Matt Trannon. Now he will have the opportunity to do the same thing with Harris.

Harris, who was recruited and offered in both sports by the Spartans, picked Michigan State over interest from Michigan, Notre Dame, and others.

While Harris was recruited in both sports, due to NCAA bylaws he will be attending Michigan State on a football scholarship, though his plans are to play both sports, at least at the beginning.

"I know his plan for his freshman year is to play both sports," said Meanstreets AAU Coach Emanuel Christmas. "After that he could possibly focus on one sport if that is what he wants to do."

Harris told Allen Trieu of FoxSportsNext that the head coaches in both sports made all the difference.

"It's only 45 minutes away and both coaches, Izzo and Dantonio are going to be there for awhile," Harris told Trieu. "Their system fits me really good in football and basketball. I know Dantonio is going to throw the ball so I'm going to love playing for him and Izzo too. They're both great coaches."

Currently Harris is rated as the No. 65 player in the country and the No. 14 shooting guard in the country.

Harris plays wide receiver on the football field, and is considered one of the best young prospects in the state of Michigan. With this commitment both Mark Dantonio and Izzo are getting a quality player who could come in and contribute significantly over the course of his career.

While he technically isn't on a basketball scholarship, this is the first commitment for the Spartans in the class of 2014.
