Waking up to be at team weight lifting sessions at 6:30 a.m. is part of the job for SMU commit Daniel McCarty, who is entering his senior year at Alamo Heights in San Antonio.
McCarty is large presence at 6-4, 280 for his high school, where he currently plays tackle before he will slide inside to play either guard or even center for the Mustangs.
But McCarty has unfinished business at Alamo Heights with his mind on only one thing as he enters his final high school season.
"Winning a state championship. Getting the whole college football thing out of the way so I can focus on being the best player I can be," McCarty said about focusing on his senior season.
Even though McCarty's high school throws a lot out of the shotgun like SMU's Run N' Shoot, McCarty believes his strength is in his run blocking, which he is successful at because of an unparalleled athleticism that he believes sets him apart from pack.
On film, McCarty can be seen getting up to the second level of a defense with quickness and getting down the field to make key blocks for his running backs and receivers. With all of his athleticism, McCarty has focused on bulking up during his school's workouts while the ‘skinny people play 7 on 7.'
McCarty camped at SMU, Rice and Texas Tech this summer, but said his commitment is solid. He is done with camps and will not be opening up his recruitment. In fact, SMU was at the top of the list from the first time he visited.
"I'm excited about moving to the new conference when I'll be there," McCarty said. "I love Dallas and love SMU, and the campus is beautiful up there."
With McCarty's versatility along the offensive line, SMU will undoubtedly be looking forward to getting the 6-foot-4, 280-pounder on campus and watching him grow under offensive line coach Bob Palcic's new direction.
