Louisiana Notebook

The month of July has seen a flurry of recruiting activity occur in the state of Louisiana. LSU recently held its second camp of the summer, and several offers were handed out, in addition to the Tigers receiving a commitment from four-star '13 WR/DB Rickey Jefferson. Over the weekend, University Lab '15 RB Nicholas Brossette added Alabama and Florida St. offers to go along with one from LSU.

  • Commitments

LSU got a commitment last week from four-star WR Rickey Jefferson (pictured below), who could play DB or wideout for the Tigers after he completes his senior year at Destrehan. Les Miles also secured a verbal from four-star MLB Melvin Jones (Washington-Marion).

Florida State got a recent commitment from Brother Martin '13 OL Ryan Hoefeld, who is currently listed as the No. 9 center in the nation. Hoefeld earned an offer from the Seminoles after a great camp effort in June. TCU and Louisiana Tech were given consideration prior to Hoefeld announcing his pledge.

Ouachita Parish '13 LB Caleb Tucker pulled the trigger in favor of Washington. Tucker and the Lions advanced to the 5A quarters last year before losing a heartbreaker on the road to Carencro.

Tulane racked up a nifty 11 commitments over the past four weeks. Eight of those came from in-state prospects, who are listed here: DB Richard Allen (John Curtis), DL Corey Smith (O.P. Walker), DB Parry Nickerson (West Jefferson), DL Antonio McGhee (Parkway), DL Eric Bell (West Saint John), OL Chris Taylor (Zachary), LB Quinlan Carroll (Belle Chasse) and LB Lyn Clark (O.P. Walker).

Louisiana Tech landed DE/LB Hakim Gray (North DeSoto) and WR Trent Taylor (Evangel Christian).

The UL Ragin' Cajuns collected commitments from OL D'Aquin Winthrow and WR Devin Scott. Farmerville TE DeQuin Andrews also went with the Cajuns and head coach Mark Hudspeth.

St. Michael QB Brandon Fields pledged his services to the Fordham Rams.

Expectations are high for the 5A West Jefferson Buccaneers, who had a fourth prospect (TE Draper Riley to Southern Miss) commit to an FBS school in the past month.

Warren Easton MLB Edward Williams committed to Texas A&M. The Aggies now have two top Louisiana MLBs (four-star Darian Claiborne is the other) in the fold.

  • Offers

LSU handed out offers during and shortly after its July camp. '14 OL Garrett Brumfield (University Lab), '14 WR Malachi Dupre (John Curtis Christian), '14 WR Trey Quinn (Barbe) and '14 TE/WR Jacory Washington (Westlake) all got offered by the Tigers.

'13 TE Deondre Skinner, an Arkansas commit from Patterson HS, got an offer from LSU, which plans to take three tight ends, per Skinner's discussion with the Tigers' staff.

Frank Wilson from LSU is reportedly very high on '14 RB Sione Palelei (East Ascension). Utah offered Palelei, who camped at LSU in June and Alabama this month. BYU is also big on the Bayou State speedster.

'17 S/RB Dylan Moses (University Lab), pictured below, was offered by LSU. Moses (6-0, 205, 4.46) earned his offer with a fantastic camp performance.

Washington and William Clapp (Brother Martin '14 OL) were recipients of an Alabama offer over the weekend. The Crimson Tide also extended an offer to '15 RB Nicholas Brossette (University Lab), as did Florida State. Washington and Quinn - both from the Lake Charles area - were both offered by Texas A&M, as well.

'16 LB Ja'Ceiry Linzer (Westgate) doesn't have an offer yet, but head coach Ryan Antoine says it's only a matter of time before the 6-2, 205-pounder gets started. Antoine says LSU has keen interest in Linzer, who competed in the Tigers' 7v7.

'13 safety Dondre Dobbins (Scotlandville) was offered by UTSA and Southern. Former Miami head coach Larry Coker is at UTSA.

San Diego State offered DB/RB/LB Brandon Porter ('13, John Curtis) and Houston commit Josh Thomas (Evangel Christian).

  • Lagniappe

Three-star FB Cethan Carter, an H-Back out of Archbishop Rummel, has several offers. He went to Minnesota to earn a camp offer - and said the Gophers would be his likely favorite if they pulled the trigger.

Three-star WR Shelby Christy (Dutchtown) camped with Mississippi State, which might get a commitment from Christy within the next week. By Friday night, he was still considering a few other schools, such as TCU, Ole Miss and Louisiana Tech. Nebraska was showing new interest. Another Louisiana prospect ('13 DB/WR/RB Carlton Perkins from Walker) wants an offer from the Cornhuskers. The in-state Cajuns have offered Perkins, as has Memphis (and others).

'14 CB Laurence Jones (Neville) camped with LSU. His teammate, '13 four-star WR/S/QB John Diarse, hopes Jones will follow his lead to Baton Rouge. Alabama is also a major player in the race to land Jones. Stanford is another school that has piqued the interest of the 6-2, 215-pound junior.

LSU commit Jeryl Brazil accepted an invitation to play in the Under Armour All-American Game. Cameron Robinson, a '14 OL from Ouachita, was invited to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. Brazil shined at The Opening in Oregon this summer.

'13 S Trevell Dixon, who plays QB for West Saint Mary, withdrew his commitment from Nebraska. There were reports that Dixon switched his verbal to Arizona State.

'13 LB Duke Riley camped with LSU, Ole Miss, TCU, Mississippi State and Tulane. The three-star '13 prospect from John Curtis said he's not certain when he'll make a decision. He hasn't named a favorite.

'13 RB Sherman Badie was on the verge of committing to Tulane a couple of times, but it never happened. Badie and '13 backfield mate Tevin Horton camped with the Cajuns on Sunday. Badie has offers from Minnesota, Memphis, North Texas and others. Tulane offered Badie but decided to back off and scrutinize things more closely. Horton, who camped at numerous schools (including Miss. St., Southern Miss, McNeese St., TCU and Tulane), is still (surprisingly) waiting on his first offer. He was named All-First Team RB by this network following his performance at the U.S. Army Junior Combine in January.

St. Thomas More QB Brandon Bergeron and WR Jake Juneau (both 2013) camped with Houston. Bergeron has a Memphis offer. Juneau (pictured below) isn't a big guy, but there's no denying his athletic ability (big-time SPARQ rating). Juneau's older brother (Jon Juneau) is a preferred-walk on entering his true frosh season at LSU.
