"It's God's work," dad said of his son getting an early offer from Ole Miss. "I thought, 'it's God showing us something.' I believe that God puts things in our life and lines us up with them accordingly."
The spiritual elder Washington talked about hearing that his son - on his way into the ninth grade - nabbed an SEC offer.
"When I first heard about it, I was like, 'Is this for real?," Washington said. "At the same time, I don't want to sound arrogant, but (Robert, Jr.) has put in the work. His teammates (on the USA National team) and their opponents respect Robert's work ethic.
"I pushed him in boxing, but he loves football. He put in the work to be a football player. He has the dedication. He's gained 30 pounds over the last year and is 5-10, 180 to 185 pounds."
Which factors will be important when it comes time to make a collegiate decision?
"Academics," dad answered. "His mom and I will look at the schools he wants, and we'll compare that with the schools we think he should be in academically. After that we'll all have to come to an agreement. In the past, it was North Carolina and Duke a lot, and now he's added Ole Miss, LSU and Alabama."
Robert Washington (Jr.), who is coached at SouthLake Christian by Geoff O'Donnell, then talked about his recruitment.
"When I got the offer, it was mind-boggling," he said. "It's a blessing to get this at such a young age - before I've even played a game of varsity football. My coach (O'Donnell) told me that Ole Miss offered.
"I can't explain in words how good it feels to get that first one. My goals this year are to rush for 1,000 yards and for our team to be state champions. I have high interest in LSU. I like their offensive style; I like their running offense. I've been liking LSU for a long time. I like how Tyrann Mathieu plays. I'm not a corner, but I like how he plays. He eyes the ball. I also like Eric Reid, Morris Claiborne and (Ron) Brooks."
Washington has a week to relax before fall camp gets started.
