Friday Night Lights Notes

Florida had their final camp of 2012 and Friday Night Lights was a success again. Scout talks about FNL here.

Around 200 prospects were at Florida for Friday Night Lights and here are some notes from the event.

  • Kelvin Taylor is like a celebrity already on the Florida campus. Before the camp, people were asking for him to take a photo with them, following him around, and he still has another year of high school. One of the top running backs in the country is the son of former UF great Fred Taylor. He did not workout at FNL, but did spend some time around the Gator coaches.

  • Gainesville, Fla. wide receiver Chris Thompson had a good night inside The Swamp. He was one of the better receivers there and he seemed to catch the attention of the UF coaches. He does not have an offer from the Gators, but that could be discussed in the near future. He is one to keep an eye on.

  • Demarcus Walker is a five-star defensive tackle on Scout and he drew five-star attention Friday night. If Dan Quinn wasn't around him, then Will Muschamp seemed to be. Muschamp and Walker had their arm around each other for around five minuted about an hour and a half into the camp. Walker is considering Florida and it seems to be a Florida-Alabama battle for this top prospect.

  • Georgia 2014 commitment Demarre Kitt entered the camp late and he did not get a ton of reps, but he was solid when he did. He remains solid to UGA at this time, but he has visited Auburn, Florida, and Tennessee recently.

  • Florida commitment Max Staver had a strong showing in front of his future coaches. He threw a very catchable ball all night and he threw some nice deep passes down the sideline to different receivers. He spun the ball well and the ball came out of his hand with some zip on it.

  • Columbus (Ga.) Carver athlete Marqui Hawkins has gotten a little bigger and he was one of the top wideouts on hand. He really caught the ball well in traffic and he got behind defenders to catch a deep balls as well. He is not the quickest off the ball, but he was physical, and strong.

  • Trevonte Valentine is a 2014 defensive lineman out of Bayside (Fla.) and he did not compete at the camp. He did mingle with the coaches and other prospects much of the night and he does hold an offer from the Gators.

  • Jordan Sherit and Marcel Harris are two 2013 in-state targets for the Gators and both spent time with coaches on the UF staff. Coach Quinn spent time around each of them and both seem to have the Gators high on their list. Neither worked out at Friday Night Lights.

  • Florida commitment Joshua Outlaw showed good feet throughout the night. He moved well in the drills as the 1on1s. He is lean and needs to add strength, but he has very good feet, he has good agility, and could play tackle or guard at UF.

  • A quarterback that continues to improve is Akeem Jones out of Carol City (Fla.). Jones was right there with Staver when talking top quarterback at this event and he continues to show he can play quarterback on the next level. Nobody has officially offered him yet (Reports are UF offered as an athlete after the event), but schools will before all is said and done. He still has to work on his technique, but he has the arm, has really improved his accuracy, and he is a good athlete.

  • Applaud UF commit Daniel McMillan for competing, learning, and working on his technique at FNL. He is still working on his drops and pass coverage, so he may not have looked like a Top 100 linebacker at all times at an event like this, but he wanted to get better, so he went to work, and he actually held his own against tight ends and running backs. He had a couple of very nice reps and he struggled other times. This is an area he needs to work on like many high school linebackers.

  • Lincoln (Fla.) teammates Reggie Davis and Taj Williams were both in Gainesville, but neither worked out. Former Gator Jaquez Green, now a coach at Lincoln was with them. Davis is currently committed to UGA and Williams has talked about Alabama, South Carolina, and Tennessee recently as his leaders.

  • 2014 offensive lineman Reilly Gibbons was under the weather, but still attended FNL. He passes the eye test and it is easy to see what he has around 20 scholarship offers already. Florida has not offered him yet, but he is someone they are evaluating on both sides of the ball right now. The junior out of St. Petersburg, Fla. was offered by Indiana on Friday.

  • The Florida commitments that did not compete in the camp seemed to stay close together all night. Ahmad Fulwood, Nick Washington, Adam Lane, Quinten Powell, and many others already look like teammates from the outside.

  • Will Muschamp seemed to really be eyeing 2013 offensive tackle Sandley Jean-Felix early on when the prospects were going through the drills. He was the best looking offensive lineman to the eye and if he improves his academic status, some big offers could come in. He is raw, but he has a lot of potential.

  • Booker T. Washington (Fla.) 2014 defensive lineman Chad Thomas was at the camp and he drew attention from multiple UF coaches. Thomas told Scout he does not have an offer from the Gators yet, but he very much appears to be on their radar. He is a 6-foot-6, 240 pound junior.

  • 2014 running back Mardre London is one to watch over the next 18 months. He is a big back at 6-foot-1, 200 pounds, but he has very good hands and a nice burst. He will share the load with 2013 running back Fred Coppet this season, so he may not have huge numbers, but he is a definite Division I running back. He had a strong showing in Gainesville.
Chad Simmons is currently a National Recruiting Analyst for FOX Sports/Scout. He started with Scout in 2003 and then moved on to another Recruiting Service from 2004-2008 before returning to Scout the first of 2009 to become South Recruiting Manager.
