Utah HS Tour: Part 1

Recruiting news and notes from the first two stops in Salt Lake City. Visited with players from East HS and Cottonwood HS in the past 24 hours...

East HS
East has this week off from practice, before getting rolling next week. So while I didn't get to see any action, I did meet up with a pair of BYU commits in DT Merrill Taliauli and FB Patrick Palau. I was impressed with the intelligence and character of both prospects, two of the nicer players I have spoken with this spring.

Merrill, who goes by Meti, is a player to watch this fall and could see his ranking rise. Taliauli has great size and good quickness off the ball; he should be one of the most dominant defensive linemen in the state.

I will have interviews out with Taliauli and Palau this week. While I wasn't able to speak with all the players I wanted at East, I did get tape on WR John Fakafahua, 2014 DE Korey Rush and 2014 RB Ula Tolutau, so watch for that as well.

Cottonwood HS
The Colts are loaded this season, with talent at the skill positions and on the lines. Cottonwood begins practice tomorrow, but players were out this morning for conditioning and lifting. Two notable names missing were WR (UCLA commit) Inoke Lotulelei and TE (Utah commit) Saile Fakailoantonga. Lotulelei was reportedly banged up at practice yesterday, while Fakailoantonga is still recovering from a knee injury that could cause him to miss some games.

Utah has offered a pair of lineman from Cottonwood and I was impressed with the athleticism of both Haile Falemaka (Utah commit) and Elijah Tupai. Falemaka appears to be OL all the way, while Tupai could wind up on either side of the ball.

I will have interviews coming out over the next week with QB Cooper Bateman (Alabama commit), RB Gabe Hosea, OL Haile Falemaka (Utah commit), OL Elijah Tupai, OL Niva Kinikini, 2015 DE T.J. Fehoko and 2014 LB S.J. Fehoko.

Check back later tonight, I will be out at Alta HS and Bingham HS this afternoon to speak with more coaches and players.
