Simmons: Notes from the Road

Recruiting Analyst Chad Simmons has spent a lot of time on the road and you can get some of the scoop he has picked up while out right here.

  • Lawrenceville (Ga.) Central Gwinnett linebacker Trey Johnson is now being recruited to play outside linebacker instead of inside linebacker by the Auburn Tigers. Johnson committed to Ted Roof last August and Roof liked him on the inside, but new Defensive Coordinator Brian Van Gorder likes him on the outside. Johnson is still a strong AU commit, but he does plan to visit other schools. Penn State is one he is considering because of his connection to Roof.

  • Tucker has a 2014 prospect that will generate a lot of buzz this year if he stays healthy. Elisha Shaw is a 6-foot-5, 295 pound junior that can play offensive tackle or defensive tackle on the next level. He sat out last season due to academic issues, but is back this year, and he has already been offered by Alabama and Florida State. I saw him play Friday night and I was very impressed with his footwork, agility, and his flexibility.

  • Five-star safety Vonn Bell out of Ridgeland is going to cut his list down to three schools, but the exact time is still unknown. It could come this month, but it may not be until September. Bell is starting to think more about recruiting now and he said he thinks his decision could "surprise" some people. He still has a list of seven right now and most seem to think Ohio State and Tennessee lead the way. Only time will tell. He is looking to make a decision around the middle of the season.

  • 2015 running back Johnathan Hawkins has picked up some early offers. The 5-foot-11, 200 pound sophomore out of Central Gwinnett has been offered by Arkansas, Auburn, and Penn State, and he feels Georgia is close to offering next. He spent time in Athens not long ago. He is a powerful back with good balance.

  • A freshman to keep an eye on at Central Gwinnett is Nigel Adams. He is a kid that could see time at linebacker and running back on the varsity level this season. He is a good athlete that is very strong for his age. He has the tools to be a real prospect in 2016.

  • Signal Mountain (Tn.) has a 2015 tight end that is going to draw a lot of attention down the road. Harrison Moon is his name and he is currently 6-foot-4, 250 pounds. He has a great lower-body, good length, and he could end up being recruited to play offensive tackle if he continues to grow. He showed good hands, nice concentration, and a lot of raw athleticism in their scrimmage against Ridgeland.
