Dallas Skyline may be the top team in the state of Texas, but replacing star linebackers Peter Jenkins and Dominic Spencer will be no easy task. However, junior Victor Evans believes he can fill the void nicely and help lead the Raiders to a state championship.
‘We are ready to win state. We have a lot of big names on our team including some All-Americans," Evans said. "I'm ready to lead the team and dominate. Some people think because we lost some of our linebackers that we are going to be in a bind, but we're going to state this year."
Despite seeing only limited playing time last season, the 2014 prospect has already picked up an offer from SMU and has been in constant contact with defensive coordinator Tom Mason.
"I respect SMU a lot. I really like their coaching staff. The defensive style is cool, and I like the way they play," Evans said. "Coach Mason says he really likes my speed and how I come off the ball. My IQ is really high on the field, and I'm just a playmaker."
Evans received the scholarship after a dominant performance at SMU's summer camp. But the 6-foot-3, 223-pound prospect didn't get to see much while he was on campus, which is why he's planning to make an unofficial visit by the end of the month.
"I talked to SMU last weekend about visiting the school with our offensive lineman Tyrus Barrett," Evans said. "We were supposed to visit Sunday, but some things came up. I definitely want to make sure to visit before the school year starts."
SMU commit Roderick Moore has been talking to his young teammate about the possibility of playing together at the next level and anchoring the Mustang defense in the near future. Evans says he's certainly listening and thinks ‘it would be cool' to join Moore on the Hilltop.
"Roderick has talked to me every now and then about SMU and told me I could get on the field quicker if I were to join him there," he said. "I would think he's right so I'm considering SMU as one of my options. It's close to home, and I know it's a really good school."
Evans has recently heard from Nebraska and Indiana and has spoken to Texas A&M and Texas Tech. Evans says he hopes to pick up his second offer soon from one of his two dream schools- Michigan and Texas.
