Pulaski Academy got the chance to hit another team for the first time since last season when the Bruins scrimmaged Fayetteville last week.
Although the Bulldogs defeated the Bruins 48-27, Pulaski Academy tight end Hunter Henry said the scrimmage helped the team significantly.
"It was our first game since last year and we had some new guys come in and step up," he said. "I think that experience will help us out a lot as we head out to California for a big-time game and I think playing a team like Fayetteville that is one of the top teams in Arkansas will help us be prepared for that.
"We learned a lot from that game and we can continue to improve on that."
To open the 2012 season, Pulaski Academy will travel to West Hills, Calif. to face the Chaminade Eagles. Henry said the chance to travel to California will be an "exciting experience."
"We're not showing our program to only Arkansas, but we get to go to the West Coast and we're taking it national and get to show our program around," Henry said. "It's exciting and we just need to go out and play and if we play our game, it will go well."
Along with preparing for the season, the four-star tight end got the chance to see three fellow Razorbacks commits in action at the scrimmage.
"It was awesome to see those guys play," Henry said. "They're going to be my teammates and we'll probably room together as well. It was pretty cool to see them again and we've gotten closer after our commitments and everything. Those guys are really cool and I can definitely see why they are great players. I hadn't seen them in a while, but they are all great players individually."
The scrimmage consisted of two four-stars with Henry and Fayetteville quarterback Austin Allen. Allen threw for 354 yards for the Purple 'Dogs and Henry accounted for 97 receiving yards for the Bruins. Henry said he is looking forward to the opportunity to play with Allen at the next level.
"Austin looked great," Henry said. "He had an awesome game and he has an unbelievable arm. I can't wait to catch passes from him. That's going to be fun."
Defensively, the game featured Alex Brignoni and Brooks Ellis, though Brignoni was limited by a slight hamstring injury. Henry said he and Ellis got to face off a few times and he was impressed by his play, as well.
"Brooks tried to hit me a couple of times, but it was fun to play against him," Henry said. "He's a great linebacker and it will be interesting to see how he gets better.
"He's really good both in pass coverage and against the run. He's a fast, physical guy and he's gotten stronger and he will continue to get better as time goes on."
While Henry said he was glad to see his teammates in action during the scrimmage, he also said he is focused on his senior season and achieving goals with his team. Having his commitment out of the way may help with that.
"The only expectation we have is a state championship," he said. "That's all we we expect.
"I wanted to focus on my senior year, but for a while I didn't know if I would commit beforehand, but then I figured it out and once I knew, I decided not to wait and just got it done. It will alleviate some stress and will help me focus on my team and my personal life."
