Sunshine State Week One Report

All across the state of Florida high school teams opened up the season with their "Kickoff Classic/Jamboree" games. While the games do not count in terms of record, they were hard fought with plenty of rivalry games. We were lucky to attend three of them, here is re-cap of the week it was.

Best Team: Miami Booker T. Washington

After losing in the state title game a year ago (led by double digits in 4th quarter), Booker T appears poised to finish the deal this year. The losses were few and the returning starters are many, this looks like one of the top 5 teams in the entire state regardless of classification. It won't be easy as BTW has Cocoa in their half of the 4A draw (another team with a big opening week win).

Up next is another team that we saw this week: Carol City. In two weeks we will learn even more about this team as they will take on another nationally ranked team in Miami Central.

Thomas is a 5-star with the skills to be special

Top 2013 Prospect Performance: LB Matthew Thomas, Booker T. Washington

Linebacker Matthew Thomas dominated his game from start to finish. ( SEEN HERE) The 6'3 athlete lined up at MLB, OLB, and DE on his way to double digit tackles. Thomas is ranked as a five-star prospect and proved it as he was the best player on this loaded field Saturday night. His ceiling is way up there and he should help relatively early in his collegiate career (Miami, Alabama, Florida State).

If Thomas continues to play like he did Saturday, he will have earned his way into an all-time great linebacker discussion in Dade County.

Honorable Mention: DL/OL Regie Meant (Ida Baker), OL Denver Kirkland (BTW), DE Paul James (Norland), and QB Akeem Jones (Carol City)

Top 2014 Prospect Performance: QB Treon Harris, Booker T. Washington

Treon Harris led the offense to victory as a QB and he pretty much had his way all night against the big, physical defense at Northwestern. He has 4-5 star tools at CB, but at this stage he seems intent on playing QB at the next level.

He has improved his passing and just seems more comfortable as a QB. He deserves a lot of credit for his leadership ability and can make plays on the edge. Harris is part of a family of football players with his dad the Head Coach (Ice Harris), brother the OC (Tim Harris- track at Miami), and brother in the NFL (CB Brandon Harris).

Honorable Mention: S Johnny Garrow (Baker), WR Trayon Gray (Carol City), OL Levi Walton (Baker), S Tajze Battle (Dunbar)

Top 2015 Prospect Performance: LB James Hurajay, Dunbar

Making his first start, Hurajay showed that he has a very bright future. At 6'1 he is light in the seat, but plays the game with a passion and toughness that is hard to find. Really physical player that has the tools to do it all down the road.

We loved his ability to roam from sideline to sideline and he has the athleticism to be a stand-out Safety. He is well worth keeping an eye on going forward.
