Louisiana 4A Week 1 Team Rankings

Laurence Jones and the Neville Tigers flexed their defensive muscles in a 23-2 week one win at 5A Ruston.

1. EDNA KARR (1) -- (0-0) -- Last week, the Cougars were idle after their game vs. 5A state-ranked St. Paul's was canceled due to Hurricane Isaac. Karr edged No. 3 St. Augustine in the jamboree two weeks ago, 14-12. Four-star TE Standish Dobard is committed to Miami. Four-star CB Noel Ellis is committed to Texas A&M. This week: at 5A No. 10 Hahnville (0-0)

2. NEVILLE (2) -- (1-0) -- Last week, the Tigers defeated 5A Ruston, 23-2. QB John Diarse (pictured at bottom), a four-star LSU commit, ran for one TD and passed for two more. Junior CB Laurence Jones intercepted Ruston QB C.J. Gatlin to set up a field goal. This week: vs. Woodlawn-Shreveport (0-1)

3. ST. AUGUSTINE (3) -- (1-0) -- Last week, the Purple Knights defeated No. 4 McDonogh #35, 41-26. St. Aug had a successful official start to the Cyril Crutchfield era as junior RB Leonard Fournette gained 139 with two TDs and tacked on a two-point conversion. 6-8 hoops star Craig Victor made his presence felt in his first gridiron outing with a TD catch. McDonogh #35 beat St. Aug twice last year. This week: vs. 5A Brother Martin (0-0) on Saturday

4. MCDONOGH #35 (4) -- (0-1) -- Last week, the Roneagles lost to No. 3 St. Aug, 41-26. QB Willard Cheatham threw for 212 yards and a pair of scores. Cheatham kept for another TD. Senior Carlos Henderson is apparently back from injury (ran for two-point conversion). This week: at Lutcher (0-0)

5. LUTCHER (6) -- (0-0) -- Last week, the Bulldogs were idle. Lutcher topped 5A state-ranked Destrehan in a preseason jamboree. QB Ruston Matherne tossed two TDs and rang up 170 yards through the air. This week: vs. No. 4 McDonogh #35 (0-1)

6. SALMEN (5) -- (0-0) -- Last week, the Spartans were idle. Four-star WR Chuck Baker, an LSU commit, helped the Slidell program to a jamboree win over East Jefferson. This week: 2A Riverside Academy (0-0)

7. O. PERRY WALKER (8) -- (0-0) -- Last week, the Chargers were idle. OLB Lyn Clark and DE Corey Smith are committed to Tulane. This week: vs. 5A Higgins (0-0)

8. WASHINGTON-MARION (9) -- (1-0) -- Last week, the Charging Indians defeated Peabody Magnet, 34-12. Four-star Melvin Jones plays inside linebacker and quarterback for head coach Freddie Harrison. This week: at 5A No. 4 Barbe (1-0)

9. BREAUX BRIDGE (NR) -- (1-0) -- Last week, the Tigers defeated 5A Westgate, 28-21. Breaux Bridge entered last year ranked No. 2, but there were concerns about how the team would replace Travin Dural, Kavahra Holmes, Lamar Louis and Tyren Alexander. There are no hiccups yet after wins over Westgate and (jamboree opponent) Carencro (2011 5A state runner-up). This week: at 3A state-ranked Notre Dame (0-0)

10. TEURLINGS CATHOLIC (NR) -- (1-0) -- Last week, the Rebels defeated 2A state-ranked Catholic-New Iberia, 19-7. RB Zack Lafleur rambled for 98 yards on 18 carries with a 42-yard scoring jaunt. Kicker Jacob Cunningham hit a 38-yard field goal. This week: vs. 4A Alexandria Senior High (0-1)

10. HELEN COX (NR) -- (1-0) -- Last week, the Cougars defeated 5A John Ehret, 49-0. Head coach Willie Brooks' team also blanked its jamboree opponent, L.B. Landry (24-0). DE Eldrick Washington is committed to Tulane. This week: vs. Warren Easton (0-0)

DROPPED OUT: St. Thomas More (0-1), Plaquemine (0-1)

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: RB/CB Hakeem Deggs (Plaquemine) - The senior registered eight tackles, two fumble recoveries (returned one 82 yards for a TD) and 300 all-purpose yards with two more scores in his team's loss to Brusly.
