West Jefferson Prospect Report

West Jefferson has as much offensive talent as any team in Louisiana. The Buccaneers boast two wideouts - Ronald Lewis and Devin Scott - committed to Arizona State and the UL Ragin' Cajuns, respectively. In addition, OL D'Aquin Winthrow is also a Cajuns pledge; TE Draper Riley is a Southern Miss verbal; QB Chavin Gougis threw five TDs Friday; and RB Jamell Gilbert rushed for 99 yards.

Ronald Lewis, the explosive three-star WR, committed to Arizona State earlier this week.

"I'm feeling good about the future for me (with the Sun Devils)," he said. "Coach (Michael) Norvell is happy. He congratulated me about the commitment and said I can play as a freshman. I can't wait to get up there and visit ASAP."

West Jeff entered the season ranked No. 2 on our Class 5A list, and the Bucs had a big opening night by hammering John Ehret on Friday (57-23).

"We've been practicing hard and working hard," Lewis said prior to the game. "We're ready to get out there and put on a performance."

Offensive lineman D'Aquin Winthrow, one of two Cajuns' commits (along with Devin Scott) on the roster, also chimed in with a few pregame quotes.

"I feel real good and if we play good it could be a blowout tonight," he said. "Coach (Tim) Rebowe, Coach Hud (Hudspeth), Coach (Reed) Stringer and Coach (Tim) Rodrigue all stay in contact with me from UL. I'm looking forward to becoming a Ragin' Cajun.

"The key for us this year is to do well up front. Devin is a fast guy (two TDs last night) with the hands to catch it."

Senior RB Jamell Gilbert hit the 99-yard rushing mark last night for West Jeff, which was playing its first game of the season after Hurricane Isaac wreaked havoc on the week one schedule.

"I'm 5-8, 175 pounds, and I'm hearing from Louisiana Tech, UL and ULM," Gilbert said. "Coach (Pierre) Ingram and Coach (Jeff) Koonz are recruiting me from Tech.

"I'm trying to rush for 1,000 yards this year and help our team get past the first round of the playoffs (lost to Byrd in the 2011 postseason opener).

"Tech is recruiting me and one other back. Their coaches are waiting to see how I do this season before offering. I'm going to keep working hard, stay focused and give 100%."
