Lockett looks like elite 2014 prospect

Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei has their strongest team in years and you probably have to go back to Matt Barkley's junior season when the Monarchs were this talented on both sides of the ball.

One player who made a big impact for Mater Dei during the summer 7 on 7 circuit was defensive back Jonathan Lockett. The 2014 class looks strong once again in the secondary and Lockett is definitely a player who could project as a national recruit.

Lockett looked very good Friday night as the Monarchs completely shut down a pretty good Santa Monica (Calif.) passing attack. He has good size, is very smooth and plays with a high football IQ.

The athlete has excellent ball awareness and can play the pass and the run equally well. Lockett is a physical player and shows the speed and hips to turn and run with receivers down the field. Some have questioned his top end speed but Lockett definitely plays fast and is an elite prospect for sure.

On the recruiting front, Lockett told Annabell Stephan of Fox Sports Next that he's still waiting for his first offer to roll in but is hearing from a number of programs.

"I'm hearing from most of the Pac-12, plus Nebraska and Arkansas," Lockett said. "No one is really standing out right now; I just know I want a school that will give me a good education and somewhere that I feel comfortable."
