Chandler Focused on Big Picture

The Tacoma (Wash.) Bellarmine Prep linebacker Calvin Chandler is looking beyond football for his future school...

Tacoma (Wash.) Bellarmine Prep linebacker Calvin Chandler has four offers, and a number of interested Ivy League programs, but by staying patient in the recruiting process, Chandler thinks he'll have more options to choose from.

"My offers are from Air Force, Wyoming, Navy and Army," said Chandler. "But I'm trying to keep my options open and talking with everyone I can. I'm still talking with Washington, Washington State, Colorado and Boise State a lot."

Chandler said he's put recruiting on hold to focus on his season, but keeps the communication open with schools recruiting him.

"It's just tough right now for visits, my priorities are staying with the team and helping our guys out, and the season," said Chandler. "But I'm still talking with some schools and we'll see which ones are the right fit for me. I'm hearing a lot from the Pac-12 and the Ivy, and I'm in close contact with Harvard, Yale, Princeton and Cornell. A big thing for me is looking at the academic side of things."

The academics are playing a big role for Chandler.

"I'd definitely consider going to an Ivy League school," said Chandler. "Football is my passion, and I want to play it as long as I can, but there will be one day I can't play football anymore, so I want to prepare myself for life after football. That's why the Ivy League schools are interesting."

Chandler has bulked up to 215 pounds, being 6-2, but schools like his versatility, instead of just putting him as a linebacker.

"Right now, my recruiting has kind of just been for an athlete position," said Chandler. "Wyoming was the first to offer, and they did as a receiver. The other schools have said they liked me primarily on defense, and primarily as an outside backer but they want me where I fit in the best."
