Florida Safety Has Several Offers

2013 safety Justin Porter hopes to hear more from the Terps.

Safety Justin Porter from Chaminade Madonna College Prep in Hollywood, Florida has received offers from several schools, including Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Cornell, Miami (Ohio), and Tulane. While the 2013 safety has not received an offer from Maryland, he admits he is interested in the Terps.

I like their location,” said Porter, “I like their educational opportunities, and I like the conference.”

Chaminade Madonna began their season 4-0 before losing their first game to University High School. “We're looking forward to bouncing back from that,” said Porter, “and showing how together we are as a team and proving everybody wrong that we can make it far in the playoffs.”

Porter is a hard worker in the classroom, on the field, and in the weight room. Porter describes his summer workouts, “I really worked hard in the weight room and I ran a lot to get conditioned and improve on my speed and quickness.” He adds, “I want to be able to line up against anybody and dominate. When I step on the field I want to be a force to be reckoned with.”

Porter, at 5'9” 180 lbs., admits that his weakness is his size, but says he knows it and tries to use it to make himself a better player. Porter says his greatest strength is his mind, “I'm intelligent so I can dissect the play and know what the opposing offense is going to try to do to exploit my defense.”

On the field, Porter compares his play to that of former LSU defensive back Tyrann Mathieu. He notes that they are both undersized but are both “game changers” who make big plays when they're needed. Porter also adds that his defense has a similar scheme to LSU's with the way they use their defensive backs.

When asked what he looks for in a football program Porter says, “I want to be part of a winning program that embodies what it means to be a family, where everybody has your back.”

Porter says he was very interested in Maryland early on, but has been discouraged by their recent lack of communication with him.

“They were up there in my top 5 schools,” he says of Maryland, “but I haven't had much contact lately so the recruiting process has to keep going on.” Porter still says he could potentially see himself going to Maryland if they were to show more interest down the road.

Porter has yet to take any official visits but he has scheduled visits to Yale and Princeton on December 7th. He says he plans to make his decision in December or January, after his season is over and he has taken all of his visits.
