After visiting Nebraska during Big Red Weekend, 2014 defensive end Peyton Newell (Hiawatha High in Kansas) was back in Lincoln on Saturday, to see the Huskers take on Michigan in a prime-time affair.
"I was impressed with the atmosphere and the fans. I really enjoyed that," said Newell. "It was good to see the coaches again and I have definitely established a relationship with all of them.
"I spent a lot of time with Coach Kaczenski, spent a little time with Coach Pelini, and had a 1-on-1 with Coach Osborne."
Newell wouldn't have even been in elementary school when Osborne retired, but knows his accomplishments put the former legendary coach in elite company.
"I felt honored to meet him. I know they don't introduce Tom Osborne to every recruit, so that felt special," said Newell. "We were in his office and when you look around to see all the stuff you realize everything he accomplished is remarkable."
Newell is currently the No. 20 defensive end in the 2014 class. He currently has 19 verbal offers, with schools ranging from the Big Ten, SEC, Big 12, Pac 12, and ACC.
"We are definitely past the introduction part at Nebraska," described the junior. "They are to the point where they actively try to make me feel special, to make me realize how bad they want me to be a Husker.
"I'm definitely really interested in Nebraska. I really like the school...At this point, I'm just giving everyone a fair chance to show me what they have to offer."
While Newell's is probably light years away a decision, it appears his Nebraska interest is growing, evident by a decision to return to Lincoln very soon.
