Two More WVU Commits Chesapeake-Bound

Two more West Virginia commits -- Al-Rasheed Benton and Marcell Lazard -- accepted invitations to play in the Chesapeake Bowl in late December. Zaire Williams and Daryl Worley previously accepted invites to the game.

The Chesapeake Bowl took on a decidedly bigger West Virginia flavor over the weekend when two more Mountaineer commits accepted invitations to play in the game.

Newark (N.J.) Shabazz High linebacker Al-Rasheed Benton and Bloomfield (N.J.) High offensive tackle Marcell Lazard both will play in the Dec. 29 game at Marvin F. Wilson Stadium in Hyattsville, Md. Kickoff is 2 p.m.

Benton and Lazard join William Penn Charter (Philadelphia) receiver Daryl Worley and Timber Creek Regional High (Erial, N.J.) running back Zaire Williams as West Virginia commits to play in the game.

"My initial reaction was I as in shock," Benton said. "It will be great to get to play with some guys of high caliber to get ready for the next level."

All four players will be on the north team, which is comprised of players from New Jersey, Delaware, and Pennsylvania. The south team is comprised of players from Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia.

"I'm very excited, especially since (four) WVU commits are playing in it," Lazard said. "I'm looking forward to the competition to get ready for the next level."

The two players also represent the ends of the spectrum for West Virginia commits.

Benton committed Oct. 22, and is the latest player to join the Mountaineers class. Lazard was the first member, committing April 21.

And for Benton, the game represents the opportunity to meet and interact with a few future teammates a few months earlier than he expected.

"It'll be great to develop that bond as teammates and establish these connections early before we even get to Morgantown (W.V.)," Benton said. "There's a big difference from just texting these guys to now being able to actually share the same field with them."
