Heading into his senior season, LSU wide receiver commitment Chuck Baker had a goal of reaching the playoffs as well as improving as a player. The three-star prospect believes he has accomplished both of those things this season.
Baker, having just returned from a visit to LSU, is now looking forward to Salmen High School's (Slidell, LA) first round matchup against Northside High School, and things couldn't be going better for the 6-2 185-pound standout.
"I just came back from LSU on Saturday and things are great," said Baker. "My high school won the district championship with an 8-1 record and we're in the playoffs, so that's good. Personally, I did well during the regular season. I scored points for my team and got better and improved my game throughout the regular season. We play Northside in the first round, and I am really looking forward to that."
With Baker being one of LSU's first commitments for the Class of 2013, he has had his share of opportunities to be around the campus and spend time with fellow LSU commitments. With his visit for the LSU-Alabama matchup now in the books, Baker says he sees himself as a Tiger more than ever.
"I went up there and hung out with my usual people, like Jeryl Brazil, John Diarse, Tre'Davious White and Rickey Jefferson," said Baker. "I got a chance to talk to all of the coaches, like coach Miles and my recruiting coach, Coach [Adam] Henry. It was a great chance for me to get to reconnect with all of my friends. Every time I go to LSU I get the feeling that it's a place that I have to be and this time was no different. I mean it was the Alabama game so that speaks for itself. I can't wait to go back."
As expected, there was a large number of recruits on campus to see LSU take on Alabama. Baker got his chance to interact with a fellow receiver recruit that LSU would love to add to their 2013 signing class.
"I talked to Ricky Seals-Jones for a while," said Baker. "I shook his hand and told him who I was, and we went from there. He looked like he was having a really great time. Most of the commits and a couple of other guys like Leonard Fournette looked like they were having a really great time and hopefully we can get those guys."
"We all got a chance to see Spike Lee, Devery Henderson and Kevin Faulk because they were in for the game and that was really neat. It just seemed like everyone at the game as a recruit was having a great time."
While Baker was an early commitment to LSU, it has been rumored that he has a little bit of work to do on the academic side of things before he can be classified as fully qualified. Baker explained that he is working hard to get everything as far as grades and test scores where it needs to be, and he is confident that he will do just that.
"I just took the ACT for the third time, and I'm supposed to get my score either this week or next," said Baker. "I think if I finish out this semester strong I will be just fine. Earlier on in my career I played around with my grades and now I'm having to catch up a little bit, but I should be fine."
Since his latest visit to LSU, Baker has turned all of his attention to his high school playoffs and isn't planning any other college visits. Regardless, Baker is only interested in visiting one school.
"Not really," answered Baker, when asked if he had any other visits planned. "I'm just focused on the playoffs and school right now. If I do make another visit this fall, it will only be to LSU."
