Gardena (Calif.) Serra has a number of talented players on its roster and linebacker Christian Herrera is doing his best to prove that he has what it takes to play college ball.

"Every week I go out and play like it's my last game. I go out there and play hard; I want to prove to these coaches that I can play for their schools at the next level," he said.

"I've been talking with UC Davis a lot lately and I'm trying to plan a trip up to California in the next few weeks. I've been trying to keep in contact with [defensive coordinator] Clandy Pendergast and Coach [Ron] Gould. I talked with [head coach Steve] Sarkisian at Washington about a month ago, too, so we'll see what happens. I'm open to anybody," he said.

Herrera took an unofficial visit to up to Berkley before the season and came away impressed with both the football program and the business school.

The 6-foot-1, 205-pound prospect is keeping optimistic that coaches will see something special when they watch his senior highlights.

"I want coaches to watch my film and see that I am a hard working player, a guy who is going after the ball on every play and will make plays for the team," he said.

Herrera and the Serra Cavaliers will play for the CIF Southern Section Western Division Championship versus West Hills (Calif.) Chaminade on Friday.
