2013 DT on KU Visit: "I can help immediately"
Maliek Collins has made the trip to Lawrence, Kansas many times before. According to the standout defensive tackle, this time, the feeling was very different. "You really get to feel the atmosphere, and just live it for a few days," he said, a thoughtful tone in his voice. It's a great atmosphere." Collins is clearly buying in to the philosophy new head coach Charlie Weis is instilling in the Jayhawk program. Weis' vision and Tim Grunhard's work recruiting Malik appear to be paying off. "I know, at Kansas, I can come in and help immediately," he said, emphatically. He went on, "I can help, even working their starters in practice." Seeming to speak to those wondering how serious Maliek is in his affinity for the Jayhawks, he added this gem. "With Kansas, I feel it's a decision I could make." Since the Yellowjackets' season ended just over two weeks ago, Collins has tried to keep himself busy. He visited Nebraska on November 17th to take in their matchup with Minnesota, and brought home an offer from the Huskers. He was nominated for the Bobby Bell Award, given to Kansas City's top small-class lineman or linebacker. And to keep working to improve his hand use and footwork, he started wrestling practice a week ago. His first match is tomorrow night. What else will he do with his spare time now that football is over? "I want to take an official visit to Nebraska or Missouri on December 7th," he said. "If not then, I may have to hold off until after winter break. I also want to go up to Iowa State to visit." As the pages keep turning on the calendar, Collins knows he's got to make a decision over the next 2 months. With that in mind, he doesn't have a Top 5, but he does know #1 and #2. "Nebraska is probably on top," he said with a grin. "Everyone else, Kansas, Missouri, Iowa State – they are all tied at #2."
