Seattle Prep (WA) defensive back Tere Calloway had been out of contact with the SMU coaching staff for a little while but recently reestablished a connection and took his official visit this past weekend.
""I really enjoyed everything especially going over things with Coach (Tom) Mason and seeing exactly where I could fit in," Calloway said. "I had already seen the campus before, but it's really nice. I did get an in-depth look at the facilities and talked to the strength and conditioning coach. He told me how the weight room is open to players and how he liked my strength."
As stated, Calloway's favorite part of the trip was simply getting to speak to SMU defensive coordinator Tom Mason about his possible future in the Mustang defensive backfield. The 5-foot-11, 185-pounder played a little bit of everything on both sides of the ball this season but safety is where most schools, including SMU, are recruiting him at.
"My meeting with Coach Mason went really well. He told me that he wants me at safety," Calloways said. "He said I could come in and compete for a starting job as a freshman because of my athleticism. He told me he wants me to be like his Troy Polamalu."
While on the Hilltop, Calloway also had a chance to speak to SMU head coach June Jones, who praised his abilities on and off the field.
"It was my second time meeting Coach Jones. I really enjoyed my time with him," Calloway said. "He told me that he really wanted me there. He said he was really impressed with my SAT scores. I also really like his NFL connections.
"He's laid back, but the problem is his practices are laid back too. I'm not too sure about them. It would take some getting used to because I've been a part of intense practices since I was seven."
Although Calloway wasn't too fond about SMU's practice habits, he did enjoy getting to learn more about the program through his host and Mustang cornerback Ajee Montes.
"Ajee was great. He told me that there is a lot of playing time available at safety," Calloways said. "He took me around with Darrion Richardson and Daniel Roundtree. We went around the dorms and I got to meet a few guys like Shakiel Randolph. It really felt like family. I also got to eat with them at Texas De Brazil. The food there was amazing."
It's no secret Calloway is a close friend of SMU quarterback commit Kolney Cassel. The two have developed a strong relationship throughout their high school playing days and Cassel would love for him to be his teammate in college.
"He actually texted me a few times during the visit," Calloway said. "I could definitely see myself playing with Kolney. He's not pressuring me as much since he wants me to make the best decision for me, but I think we would all be happy if I decided to play with him."
Calloway is preparing to play in the Semper Fi All-American Bowl on January 4 and plans to make his decision a few days after. The three-star prospect has pretty much narrowed it down to Nevada, SMU and Southern Miss, where he'll be taking an official to this weekend, but said a few schools like Colorado State and Memphis could make late pushes.
