Typically, Utah isn't one to offer a preps kicker. Andrew Gantz isn't your typical kicker. The Ohio native was offered by Utah this week and is getting closer and closer to making a decision.
"My recruitment is going pretty good. I had offers from Portland State and Cincinnati, and then Utah offered this week."
The full scholly offered by the Utes has made a big impression and could lead to a commitment very soon.
"The Utah offer is the best opportunity I'm going to get. It's out west, which is where I want to be. My kicking coach, Chris Sailor, is in Los Angeles, and Utah is close enough to where he is. It's a great place to be and their coaching staff has a low turnover rate."
The relationship that the Ohio native has built with the Utah coaching staff, and their commitment to special teams, has done wonders in making the Utes the front-runner for Gantz services.
"Coach Hill and Coach Whittingham are really good guys. They're willing to stick their neck out for me and bring in a kicker, and that means a lot. Coach Hill has been at Utah a long time and coached special teams with Urban Meyer. Meyer is one of the best special teams coaches ever and Hill learned from him. It's important that he takes special teams so seriously."
Some current Utah commits have been in touch with Gantz, trying to get him on board.
"I've talked to (Utah QB commit) Brandon Cox and (longsnapper commit) Chase Dominguez a bit about Utah. They've got a good group of special teams guys coming in and I can be a part of that."
Outside of Utah, another Pac 12 school has inquired with Gantz, but the idea of playing for the Utes and visiting in the next few weeks is very appealing.
"Arizona called yesterday, so we'll see what happens there. I took an unofficial visit to Cincinnati this summer, and Portland State wants me to come out. I'm going to be visiting Utah in the next month or so, but I'm probably going to be committing to a school in the next week."
With Utah looking like the future destination, Gantz is excited to finish up the recruiting process, and make his pledge soon.
"I've worked hard to be able to play at a big time school like Utah. The education system is great and academics are very important to me and my family and I fell like its the best fit."
