"I'm hearing from Coastal Carolina, Western Carolina and The Citadel," 2013 CB Shane Samuels said of his recruitment. "Each of them have different aspects to help me in the future in some way.
"The Citadel will [open the door] to the military," Samuels continued. "Western Carolina has a good physical therapy program, which is what I want to do. They all have a great opportunity for me to go to the NFL as well. They've all had players in the past couple of years that have gone to the NFL."
While big-time football is a dream for Samuels, he's preparing for life after his time on the gridiron.
"Being able to create a future for myself is a big part of my decision," Samuels explained. "If I don't make it to the NFL, I want to have a career to fall back on."
Samuels took an official visit to The Citadel in early October.
"It was great," he said of the trip. "I like the environment there and the way the campus is set up."
Samuels plans to take two more official visits, to both Coastal and Western Carolina, in January. On both visits, he'll have his eye on life outside of football.
"I want to see the environment there," Samuels explained. "I want to see how the people act and the way it's set up. I don't want to go to a school in the middle of nowhere. I want to enjoy the community surrounding it as well."
As for the school he's been waiting on, Samuels credits his interest to a recent unofficial visit. "I'd really like to go to Appalachian State," Samuels said. "One of their coaches used to play at our school, so I was able to visit with my current coaching staff [at James F. Byrnes High School in South Carolina]. I loved it up there. I love being in the cold. The environment was [amazing]."
Samuels will officially visit Western Carolina on January 22nd and has not yet set a date for his visit to Coastal Carolina.
