St. John Calls for Sooners

FOX Sports NEXT is in the streets this fall to bring you all the coverage from across the Midlands region. Recently, we caught up with the coach of offensive tackle Josiah St. John, who has been playing ball at Trinity Valley Community College for this past season. He just recently called and committed to play for Oklahoma...

Lots of calls have been placed to Trinity Valley coach Brad Smiley as it pertains to offensive tackle Josiah St. John. Arizona State, Washington, Tennessee and even Arkansas have reached out to either offer or some level of interest.

So when Smiley got word that St. John was going to make the call for Oklahoma, it was a bit of a surprise.

"I have to say I didn't see this coming. Calls were starting to come in from lots of programs wanting to recruit him," Smiley said of St. John's commitment to Oklahoma.

Originally from Canada, the 6-foot-6, 295-pound St. John is still somewhat learning the game according to Smiley. St. John has not been playing ball for too many years, but has progressed to the point that more than 20 programs extended an offer this season.

And though he has built up quite the track record, Smiley believes that some great days are ahead for the talented tackle.

"We got him over the summer in June. And since then it has been fun since the get-go," Smiley said. "He (St. John) had faith in the plan and worked hard. He has so much potential to get better and I can't wait to see where he is two years from now. (Assistant) Coach (James) Patton has a great player to work with."

Much like his junior college teammate, defensive tackle Quincy Russell, St. John has three years to play two. Smiley talked about the "tremendous upside" with St. John and the excellent work ethic he has.

Smiley stated that St. John will make it to campus in February, saying that the future Sooner has three classes that still need to be completed.
