Summerville High School cornerback Darin Smalls was on the receiving end of that offer.
"I thought it was pretty big. It was a huge Christmas gift," Smalls told CUTigers on Wednesday.
It was the first time that Smalls had spoken with Venables since last summer.
"He was just talking about the school, mostly," Smalls said. "He asked me what I want to major in. I want to do engineering. They have a good engineering school. He told me some more about that. He was just saying how Clemson would be a good school for me."
His primary recruiter to Clemson is running backs coach Tony Elliott.
"I talk to him a lot. We bond. We talk a lot about college and Clemson. When I talk to him, the conversation's not weird. I can talk to him without being nervous," Smalls said.
Clemson hosted him for a visit last season for the North Carolina game.
"I loved the atmosphere. It's really loud. I can just imagine how it would be on the field when you're playing," Smalls said.
He added, "I think they're a growing program. They seem to be getting better and better every year. They've got the new defensive backs coach, so I think that's a good addition for them."
The 6-foot 192-pound prospect also holds offers from South Carolina and Virginia Tech.
As a junior, Smalls had 58 tackles [45 solos], over 600 return yards, three touchdown returns, five interceptions and 12 pass breakups.
