2014 three-star DB John Bonney will participate in the U.S. Army Junior Combine today with hopes of showing off his talent and athleticism.
"I hope I do pretty well," Bonney said. "I'll try to run a good forty, and do good in the one-on-ones."
He'll stay in San Antonio through the weekend to take in the All-American game. He said he has his eye on Torrodney Prevot and Derrick Griffin, two players he played against this year en route to a berth in the state championship.
"We had a good run and everything," Bonney said. "We didn't win state, but it was pretty good…We have a lot of people coming back next year, so we're looking to make another run. We just need to keep our heads on straight."
When Bonney returns home, he said he would start focusing a bit more on his recruitment. He holds seven offers from Baylor, Houston, SMU, Northwestern, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech and LSU.
He mentioned three schools that are standing out at the moment.
"My dad graduated from Houston and my mom's an alumni from LSU, so the house is divided when it comes to that," Bonney said. "I like Baylor as well. I like the coaches and every one from Baylor has a great family feel."
He said Thomas McGaughey is recruiting him for LSU, and the allure of playing for DBU is part of what has drawn him to the Tigers.
"The conference is great," Bonney said. "Especially being a DB going there, you got a good chance of playing on the next level."
Bonney said he wants to hit the road in the spring and summer to check out as many schools as he can.
"I know for sure I'm going to Oklahoma's Junior Day and Alabama's," Bonney said. "Most of the schools that offered me, I'll probably get a chance to see them. I just don't know all the dates yet."
At 6-foot, 180 pounds, Bonney ranks as the No. 30 safety in the 2014 class. But he said cornerback is likely where he'll play on the next level.
"Right now, I'm thinking it's corner," Bonney said. "I played mostly corner this year. I think that's where they're looking at me."
With his recruitment taking off as of late though, Bonney isn't in any hurry to make a decision.
"I don't know when I'm going to make a decision yet," Bonney said. "It's still early. I'll probably talk to my parents, and hopefully soon I'll be able to narrow it down."
