Wilsonville (Oregon) Coach Adam Guenther calls Johnny Ragin III a freak. It's a compliment.
"An athlete, that's the best way to put it," Guenther said. "The kid's best football is ahead of him. He's still learning how to play the game just like most high school kids are.
"One thing you can't knock about the kid is that he is 6-2, almost 6-3, 210, 215 pounds and there's not an ounce of fat on him."
"He's kind of just looking at all of his options," the coach said. "I know he feels very comfortable with the BYU coaches. They're a great staff over there.
"He just wants to make sure that is the right spot for him. So, he's just dotting his I's and crossing his T's."
Iowa (Levar Woods) and Cal recently have traveled to Oregon to see Ragin. They're hoping to get an official visit from him.
"I don't know if that's in the works or not," Ragin said of those trips. "I know he has an official visit to BYU coming up."
"The two he has left, I'm not sure if he's planning on taking them or not at this point," Guenther said. "I've heard he's thinking hard about it. I don't know if those are definite yet.
"Of the schools that are remaining, I do believe that Iowa and Cal are the two that are peaking his interest the most."
Ragin tweeted on Monday night that he was looking forward to his visits to BYU, Cal and Iowa.
Guenther said that Iowa and BYU see Ragin as an outside linebacker. The Golden Bears aren't sure where they would use him.
"Cal is a little more open to some other opportunities, especially on the offensive side of the ball," the coach said.
Guenther said Wilsonville utilized Ragin as a fullback and also split him out to catch passes. He played outside linebacker in its 3-5 scheme.
"When we dropped down into our four-man front, he was our defensive end," Guenther said. "People had to put two or three guys on him to stop his outside rush. There was no (offensive) tackle in the state that could stop him. "
Scout.com ranks Ragin as its No. 67 OLB nationally in '13. He's a three-star, according to the service.
Note: Guenther said he would have Ragin return my call for an interview. I will add his comments if/when that happens.
