And La Verna (Calif.) Damien quarterback Gage Pucci knows it.
"Russell Wilson, that's who I always watch," Pucci said after participating in the Army National Combine in San Antonio.
At 5-foot-11.5 and 192-pounds, Pucci acknowledges that he's undersized, but quickly points to the success of Wilson, the Seattle Seahawks rookie quarterback who is the same height as Pucci.
"(Wilson) said not a lot of quarterbacks can see over the 6-foot-6 guys, so its not going to make a difference if you are 6-foot or 6-foot-3," Pucci explained. "You still can't see over them."
The 2014 quarterback is actually working to use his lack of height to his advantage, making sure to key in on the other skills that make a great quarterback. "I always keep up with my footwork and my speed," he said. "Getting out of the pocket and being able to use that."
Pucci is still looking for his first collegiate scholarship offer but is receiving plenty of interest from schools on the West Coast including Arizona, Boise State, Northern Arizona, Oregon State, and Washington State.
"The Pac-12 is definitely a goal," he said.
If there is one program Pucci is hoping to hear from it's USC, the one on the East Coast. "South Carolina is the dream school," he said. "My family is there and I know the coaches pretty well, so I have some hookups over there."
