Grand Canyon State Update: 1/13

Clarence Smith, Tyler Shank, Patrick Baldenegro and Lorenzo Melvin all make commitments. Plus much much more inside...

In this previous article, I stated that this weekend was one of the busiest weekends recruiting wise the state of Arizona has had this cycle.

Nearly a dozen kids took official visits and many made commitments. FoxSportsNext breaks it down here:

The Commitments

* Buckeye Younger RB Clarence Smith made his official visit to North Dakota State and it was enough for him to pull the trigger and commit.

The 6-3 215 pounder says, "NDSU really gave me that home feeling that I have been looking for. The level of comfort I felt on campus actually made me not want to go home as quickly as the weekend was over. I've been leaning towards NDSU because of the work ethic they put in and how hype the game environment is. They play at an aggressive speed on defense and pound the ball on offense. They are a great team that I am happy to be a part of."

* Chandler HS TE Patrick Baldenegro posted on his Facebook, "I am officially a Lumberjack." Committing to NAU over offers from Air Force, Montana and North Dakota.

* Another fellow Chandler player, OL Tyler Shank, also pledged to NAU over offers from Air Force and Idaho.

* NAU landed yet another commitment from a Valley player when Phoenix Desert Vista DL Lorenzo Melvin pledged today.

Melvin had offers from North Dakota, Western Illinois and South Dakota State.

The Previously Committed

* Phoenix Brophy LB Andrew Curtis has been committed to Florida Atlantic for over a month and says that the visit to FAU made him even more excited to be an Owl.

"The visit was amazing. The coaches were awesome, they have a brand new stadium, the weather was amazing, it's not humid because it's only a mile from the beach so we get the coastal winds. The city of Boca had good food and the players on the team were awesome guys."

* Scottsdale Notre Dame Prep CB Maurice White was one of NAU's first commitments, made his official to Flagstaff and is happy he is a Lumberjack.

The Uncommitted

* Peoria Sunrise Mountain WR Elroy Masters went on his second official visit, this one to Colorado State and says the visit went, "really really well." But he did make a commitment to the Rams.

* Anthem Boulder Creek CB Ryan McKinley also visited NAU and liked it. "The visit was real nice. From the facilities to the community, everything was great." McKinley says he is still going to visit North Dakota State next weekend.

* Peoria Centennial OT Hayden Johnson also visited NAU and liked it as well. He says, "It went really really well. I wasn't expecting it to go that well. I was really impressed. I am still going to visit Navy and Air Force though."

* Peoria Liberty QB Tyler Rogers went on his official visit to North Dakota without an offer and came home with one. He says, "It went really god. I loved everything."

Rogers says that Oregon State and Nevada have shown recent interest.

* Three-star RB Kani Benoit from Phoenix Thunderbird visited UNLV but did not commit.

* Phoenix Camelback TE/DE Antonio Zepeda visited NAU but did not commit.
