Some high school football recruits going through the recruiting process will pick a school simply off the prestige of a program or coach, neglecting the importance of the school's academics.
Not St. Xavier (Ky.) HS linebacker Deonte Clyburn.
"A big factor in my decision is going to be whoever can help me most after football," the two-star linebacker said. "Football isn't always going to be there.
"I want to major in communications."
The 6-foot-1, 210 pound linebacker visited Western Kentucky over the Jan. 11 weekend, and said he really enjoyed his stay.
"The visit went great, we toured the whole campus, walked around and saw everything," Clyburn said. "There wasn't a lot of people on campus since school was out, it was peaceful."
He's being recruited to WKU by new defensive coordinator Nick Holt.
"I like Coach (Nick) Holt a lot," Clyburn said. "We talk about linebackers a lot, he's coached some really good ones at his other schools, like USC (Southern California)."
The two-star said he's also considering Colorado State and Tennessee-Martin, and is scheduled to visit Colorado State over the Jan. 18 weekend.
"They (Colorado State and Tennessee-Martin) were my first two offers," he said. "That was important."
Clyburn said he doesn't have a set date yet to announce his decision, and could wait until National Signing Day on Feb. 6.
