It was Sunday night after the West Coast Bowl that Fontana (Calif.) Summit three-star cornerback Charles Okonkwo announced his commitment to San Diego State.
"San Diego State was the first one to offer me and have been recruiting me ever since," the cornerback said. "I just felt like they wanted me more."
"I like their coaching staff; coaches are a bunch of cool people. I got to meet them and build a relationship. They run a man defense and that fits me a lot."
The 6-foot-1, 170-pound corner chose the Aztecs over Fresno State and Nevada despite never taking an official visit down to Montezuma Mesa.
"When I went down unofficially over the summer I saw the school, the program, the facilities and what stood out was they have one of the top business programs in the country," Okonkwo explained what he liked about the school. "I plan on studying business so that was a big factor."
Safeties coach Danny Gonzales and cornerbacks coach Tony White led the charge in this recruitment. The two were up at Summit High School the day after Okonkwo pledged to the Aztecs.
"They talked to me about the program and everything," three-star prospect said. "It went really good. They were just telling me how big of a factor I am going to be for their DB's."
What exactly will Okonkwo bring to the SDSU secondary?
"An aggressive corner who is not scared to hit and cover well too," Okonkwo answered. "I think I can help out their defense a lot."
As of right now the lockdown corner still plans to take an official visit to Fresno State this weekend.
"I'm just looking at everything from academically, athletically, to the players, player's relationships with the coaching staff and vise versa," Okonkwo said of his upcoming visit to FSU.
Okonkwo becomes SDSU's 21st commit, adding to the Aztecs secondary depth of the class with recent verbals from Kalan Montgomery and Malik Smith.
