The junior defenseman, who is coming off a breakout season, first started receiving letters from WSU about three weeks ago, but the attention certainly picked up a few days ago.
"It was exciting because they started sending me a lot of letters letting me know how interested they were in me," Long said. "They've been telling me about the new facilities being built and the change in the program. There was one day actually where I got 36 letters from Coach Leach (laugh). They're wrapping up their class of 2013 recruiting and starting to look at guys for 2014."
DURING HIS JUNIOR campaign, Long recorded 80 tackles, 12 QB hurries, six sacks, four forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. His effort on defense helped Whitehouse High finish 10-2, which he said was their best finish in school history.
That kind of performance helped land him an invite to Pullman on Feb. 16 for Washington State's Junior Day event.
"I got the letter this week inviting me to go out there," Long said. "I was very excited because it was my third junior day invite (Miami and Tulsa have also extended invitations). I'm looking up some things right now and I'm talking with my dad about making the trip together. I'm pretty sure I'll be up there."
The linebacker prospect doesn't hold any offers yet, but is receiving plenty of interest from SMU, Baylor, Tulsa, Memphis, Miami and several others in addition to Washington State.
"I have a feeling Tulsa will offer soon and I'm hoping that Washington State does as well," Long said. "It would mean a lot to me if they did. Coach Leach is one of the greatest coaches in the country and he was my favorite coach when he was at Texas Tech. It would be a great experience to get an offer and be able to play for a coach like that.
"It would also mean a lot to my family knowing that we wouldn't have to worry about paying for me to get a great education."
"I think what separates me from others is my knowledge of the game," Long said. "I know the plays before teams run them and I have great lateral speed. I can fly to the ball and I'm a ball hog. I can make plays out there on the football field.
