Ontko On Junior Days

Benet Academy (Ill.) junior defensive back Porter Ontko visited two Big Ten schools for junior days And talks about the experiences inside.

2014 Benet Academy (Ill.) defensive back Porter Ontko helped turn around the team, from one win in 2011 to advancing deep into the state playoffs in 2012.

He has also earned plenty of recruiting attention since then, and most recently visited Iowa for junior day.

"I went to Iowa first for a junior day and that was great," Ontko said. "I've been down there a couple times for the Nebraska game and camps and such."

He added, "I love the facilities and the staff, Coach Wilson, Coach Doyle, and Coach Ferentz really seem like they have a plan in place to be successful for a long time, the right way."

There were several other things that Ontko really enjoyed during junior day.

"I would say the player panel was one of my favorite parts of the day," Ontko said. "The way the athletes talked about Iowa really resonated with me with their situations, aspirations, and background."

Ontko also visited Illinois for Sunday's junior day.

"I had already met and talked to Coach Ward but I got to meet Coach Clinkscale and Coach Beckman which was nice," Ontko said. "They really stressed the pride of your own state and the importance of family on the team."

He continued, "The emphasis on becoming a Big Ten contender really impressed and I think they are doing the right things to get there."

For Ontko, there are several really important things he is using junior days to learn about schools.

"I liked comparing all the different campuses and facilities just to see whats out there and hear the different philosophies," Ontko said. "You can tell where you stand with colleges just by talking with them about the team and camp and such."

He added, "Just getting invited is a good sign but really communicating with the coaches while your there is crucial to understanding where you are in a coaches eyes."

And where does Ontko stand with Iowa?

"I'm farther down in the recruiting process with Iowa, so I'm familiar with all the coaches," Ontko said. "So hopefully I can perform at their summer camp and earn an offer."

And for the Illini?

"Illinois liked my tape and also want to see me play live, so all I gotta do now is compete," Ontko said.

There are also several other colleges that Ontko has heard from.

"I've talked with Maryland and I'm on the fence on going to Minnesota's junior day because I have Benet football events that day," Ontko said. "Penn State Coach Vanderlinden came in to see me a couple weeks back and I have also heard from Boston College."
