"Coach Stoops and coach Brumbaugh came to see me today," said Reed, a three-star defensive tackle at East Mississippi Community College whose stock has skyrocketed late in the recruiting process as other prospects come off the board.
"We had a good talk. I feel real comfortable around coach Brumbaugh from playing here," Reed said of his former D-Line coach at EMCC who joined Stoops' new staff in Lexington. "I like coach Stoops, too. He said I had a real good opportunity to come in and help them right away."
The Wildcats already made a splash at EMCC in December when highly-regarded defensive end Za'Darius Smith signed with UK. He's on campus and ready to participate in spring drills.
"That helps," Reed said. "We're friends. He was my roommate. I know he'd like me to come up there with him."
If Kentucky is to pull off another recruiting coup this winter, it will have to overcome some other heavy hitters. Reed (6-4, 310) is also considering Florida, North Carolina, Ole Miss -- and most recently -- Alabama.
"All five of those are still in it," he said. "I don't have a leader right now. I'm just waiting until all of my visits are done."
Kentucky may be at a disadvantage in that regard. The Wildcats weren't able to draw an official visit from Reed yet. Only one weekend remains before national signing day, and he expects to make that one a trip to Ole Miss.
He could still squeeze in a trip to Lexington after signing day, if he isn't ready to sign with any of his other schools.
Asked if the Cats still had a chance, Reed said: "They're sneakin' up in there."
