New WSU offer stands out for Texas OT

MIKE LEACH AND the WSU staff's recruiting machine have been in high gear the past several days. Included in their efforts, a pair of teammates from a powerhouse high school in Dallas – they both just picked up WSU offers. CF.C spoke with one of those athletes, who checks in at 310 pounds and said he's thrilled Leach is interested and recruiting him.

Dallas area offensive tackle Tyus Barrett (Ty) out of Skyline High had no idea the Cougs were interested in offering him a scholarship. He had received plenty of letters from Mike Leach throughout the fall, but didn't think he would be getting an offer anytime soon.

That changed on Monday.

"You get excited for every one of your scholarship offers, but this one stood out a bit," Barrett said. "It's all the way up in Washington and I don't really know a lot about them, but my coach has told me a lot about them and I was excited to know Coach Leach is interested in me."

Skyline's head football coach is Reginald Samples. Barrett said he is very fond of Leach and his assistants.

"Coach was the one who told me about the offer," Barrett said. "He was happy for me too. He said that Coach Leach is one of the best offensive coaches that there is in the country. I grew up watching him at Texas Tech and I've always been a fan."

The Cougs are recruiting Barrett as a left tackle and it's easy to see why. The Texas product stands at 6-5, 310-pounds and has quick feet, with versatility to boot.

"The coaches at Washington State have told me that they like how aggressive I am on the line," Barrett said. "I'm big, but I know how to move my feet really well and I'm quick. They think that I can fit in their system."

With his size and agility, Barrett has picked up interest from plenty of college programs. He holds offers from Ole Miss, Texas Tech, Baylor, West Virgina, TCU, SMU and several others in addition to Washington State.

"Right now I'm open to everyone and I'm willing to listen to what's out there," he said. "I know with WSU, they're trying to come down to Dallas and get a lot of kids. I had a friend, Malik Jenkins (signed with Texas Tech), who was committed there for a while too. I like the fact that they're trying to recruit kids from Texas."

Barrett added that he currently doesn't have any spring or summer trips planned at the moment, but that he's hoping to take a few visits. He added that he would strongly consider tripping to Pullman for an unofficial visit.

The standout hoss also confirmed with CF.C that Skyline High teammate Derrick Dixon was also offered by the Washington State coaches on Monday.

Dixon is a 5-11, 185-pound defensive back prospect who is starting to see his recruitment pick up as of late. He holds offers from TCU, SMU, Texas Tech and West Virginia in addition to Washington State.

Dixon played CB and both safety positions for Skyline in 2012. Dixon finished the year with six interceptions and one fumble recovery, which he took back to the house for a touchdown.

Dixon was named to the 5A All-State second team this season as a defensive back.
