UM Coaches & Commits Tag-Team Westphal

With his decision timeline now laid out, Bolingbrook (IL) DB Parrker Westphal is ramping up his information gathering process. GoBlueWolverine caught up with the talented youngster recently to get his thoughts on his most recent trip to Ann Arbor, his interaction with Michigan recruits, his upcoming visit schedule, and more.

Relationships will loom large whenever Bolingbrook (IL) DB Parrker Westphal decides to conclude his recruitment.  As is the case with most recruits, the hard-hitting prospect has made it a point to get out to as many campuses as possible to cultivate those connections.  The schools that manage to host him on multiple occasions put themselves in prime position to do just that.

Michigan hosted him for the fifth time last weekend, and with the help of one of their top commitments, they further increased his comfort with the Maize & Blue.

“We came in and first talked to the coaches,” Westphal recalled.  “At first I was with Coach Mallory and he was telling us about his recruiting process coming out of high school, and he was giving me tips and stuff.  Then after that we spoke with Coach Mattison for probably an hour in his office.  He was just talking about what a great fit I am for the defense, how he wants to put me and corner, and how he loves my size and all of that… and he kept talking about me blitzing a lot!”

“They had a couple of recruits in (along with) Derrick Green.  He was kind of recruiting me telling me to come be a Wolverine (laughter).  But mainly we talked to the coaches.  They took us to the Big House to check out the locker room.  Then we went out on the field and saw the intro to Michigan.  Then we went to the (Michigan / Penn State) game.  Watching Glenn Robinson catch them oops was nice!”

The visit clearly put another feather in Michigan’s cap. More could be added if the efforts of a few future Wolverines prove effective.  The most persistent of the pursuers happens to be the first pledge to Michigan’s 2014 class.

“I’ve been in contact with Michael Ferns,” Westphal reported.  “He keeps talking to me about a shirt and about how he can get me one made and all that (laughter).”

While Ferns & company have certainly gotten Westphal’s attention, he isn’t ready to become Project 135’s latest victory.  He still has a great deal of evaluating to do before he reaches a decision.

“I’m going to be taking more visits,” he said.  “March 1st I’m going to Northwestern. After that nothing is set in stone, but I know I would like to see Florida.  I’d like to make my decision before the season starts just to get it out the way, but it’s not set in stone.  It’ll probably come late summer, but mainly just when I feel comfortable.”

“It’s going to come down to  the feel of the campus, the academic standards, fan base, the people around town, and the little stuff like an area where I could see myself studying at night because I’m usually up until like two in the morning studying.”
