Quick hitters: Offers galore from Cards

The University of Louisville football staff has been busy during the past few weeks, handing out a bunch of scholarship offers to prospects in the Class of 2014. Here are a few quick hitters, including quotes from many, on over two dozen prospects that landed U of L offers.

  • Houston Lamar defensive back John Bonney has picked up an offer from the Cardinals, adding it to a list that includes Baylor, California, Houston, LSU, Northwestern, Texas, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech and SMU. The 6-foot, 180-pound Boney finished his junior season with over 50 tackles, 16 pass break ups and four interceptions. He said Louisville is a "program on the rise and coach (Charlie) Strong is doing a great job over there. I have also heard nothing but good things about coach (Vance) Bedford as a defensive backs coach and defensive coordinator."
  • Louisville is searching for a tight end in the Class of 2014 and has offered a few, including Suwanee, Ga.,Lambert tight end Chris Laye, The 6-foot-5, 232-pound Laye said he's definitely interested in the Cardinals because "they're a program on the rise and coach (Charlie) Strong is one of the best coaches in the nation." Laye also has offers from Boston College, Vanderbilt and Virginia.
  • New Smyrna Beach, Fla., safety D'Cota Dixon picked up an offer from U of L and said "you can't go wrong with them. They beat Florida, had a great season and they're a great team." The 5-foot-11, 179-poun Dixon said he also has offers from West Virginia, Ball State, North Carolina State, Vanderbilt and North Carolina. He has not taken any visits.
  • Leigh Acres, Fla., East Lee County defensive back Kendall Sawyer has an offer and said he is "trying to get that connection going," with assistant coach Sherrone Moore. The 6-foot, 181-pound Sawyer has U of L, Miami, South Florida and LSU among his top four schools at this point. "I think with the Cards is a good place to be. I know it's a long way to Kentucky, but if it's for the better then I think the sky is the limit." He had eight interceptions as a junior, returning six of those picks for touchdowns. He holds seven offers.
  • Daytona Beach Mainland safety D.J. Copeland picked up an offer and noted he talks to coach Charlie Strong and assistant Tommy Restivo, saying "they are both amazing coaches. I think Louisville is a great school. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound Copeland also has offers from West Virginia and South Florida. He is ranked No. 12 in the Orlando Sentinel's Central Florida Super60 for the Class of 2014.
  • The Cardinals have offered Ohio's long jump champion in 2012 – Mykale Rogers. The 6-foot-1, 180-pound Rogers is a wide receiver from Lima, Ohio, Central Catholic. He also has offers from Bowling Green and Toledo.
  • Gallion, Ohio, wide receiver/safety Dareian Watkins now has 15 scholarship offers, including the Cardinals and said U of L is high on his list. "I think it said a lot when coach (Charlie) Strong had some big-time options and he chose to stay at Louisville. I keep going back to that. He noted U of L is also recruiting his God-brother – Cario Davison – in the Class of 2015. Watkins is a three-star prospect and the No. 38 wide receiver in the Scout.com rankings.
  • Cincinnati Winton Woods defensive back Mike Edwards added an offer from the Cardinals and also has a connection to the program. His former teammate is current U of L running back Dominique Brown. "Dominique said I would be a good fit and that it's an overall good place." He will make a visit for spring practice. HE also has offers from Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, Kent State and Bowling Green.
  • Miami Northwestern outside linebacker Michael Smith said he has the Cardinals in his top five, along with Clemson, West Virginia, Marshall and South Florida. The 6-foot-2, 220-pound Smith had 83 tackles and 17 sacks as a junior. He's from the same high school as current U of L quarterback Teddy Bridgewater and several other current members of the U of L roster.
  • Hilton Head, S.C., defensive tackle Poona Ford is blowing up with offers, including U of L and South Carolina. The 6-foot-1, 290-pound Ford attended U of L's camp last summer and has stayed in contact, noting "I like them a lot." Florida State and Ohio State are also involved with Ford. He had over 150 tackles, including 44 for a loss and 11 sacks as a junior. His other offers include Boise State, Illinois, Purdue, Georgia Tech, Utah State and Toledo among others.
  • U of L offered one of the top 2015 stars in the Jacksonville, Fla. – Jeffery Holland. The Trinity Christian running back/linebacker also has offers from Florida, South Carolina and Miami and recently visited Junior Day at Florida State.
  • Palm Beach Garden, Fla., Dwyer wide receiver Johnnie Dixon picked up a U of L offer and now has a total of more than 20 scholarship offers. Florida and Miami have the early lead for the 5-foot-11, 190-pound Dixon, considered the No. 2 receiver in the Sunshine State.
  • U of L picked up a late '13 commitment and signee from New Orleans – Lyn Clark – and has now dipped back into Louisiana to try and snag another star. The Cardinals offered tight end Anthony Jones of Class 4-A state champion New Orleans Karr. The 6-foot-6, 250-pound Jones also has an offer from Texas.
  • Louisville scored a commitment from Tampa Bay Tech in the '13 class – Richard Benjamin – and has now offered one of his former teammates. The Cardinals were the first BCS offer for Tech athlete Tajee Fulwood. He's considered one of the elite and most versatile athletes in the Tampa-area. As a junior, Fulwood returned kicks, caught passes and ran the ball. He's also a solid cover corner and averaged 46 yards on kick returns.
  • U of L also offered another standout from Tampa last week when they extended one to Tampa Catholic running back/linebacker T.J. Harrell. The 6-foot-1, 210-pound Harrell told Scout.com before the offer came from U of L that his leaders were Florida, Florida State and Boise State. He has over 20 offers.
  • And yet another Tampa prospect – Marcus Mosley – picked up an offer from Louisville. The Alonso standout plays tight end and wide receiver and also has offers from Syracuse and South Alabama. He's listed at 6-foot-4, 210-pounds.
  • Durham, N.C., Hillside safety Kalen McCain picked up his first offer last week and it was from the Cardinals. The 6-foot-2, 175-pound McCain is also hearing from Georgia Tech, North Carolina and North Carolina State. During his junior season, McCain registered 36 tackles, four interceptions (returned one for a touchdown), five pass breakups, and two forced fumbles.
  • U of L is hitting the state of Ohio hard and has offered Westerville-South (Ohio) tight end Darryl Long. The 6-foot-5 228-pound Long has eight offers on the table. He attended U of L's camp last summer and said he would make a return trip to campus. He also has offers from Pittsburgh, Indiana, Illinois and others.
  • Indianapolis Pike wide receiver Dominique Booth picked up an offer from U of L. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound Booth was the MVP of the recent Core 6 Showcase and has more than a dozen offers, including Kentucky, Indiana, California, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Missouri, Tennessee and Purdue.
  • Jacksonville, Fla., Trinity Christian wide receiver Isaiah Ford has held an offer from U of L for a couple of months. The 6-foot-2, 175-pound Ford told Scout.com that Florida State, Florida, Ohio State, South Carolina, Virginia Tech and Louisville were his leaders at this point.
  • Greenville, S.C., Carolina High School safety Zykiesis Cannon said Louisville was his first offer. The 5-foot-11, 180-pound Cannon led all of South Carolina in interceptions and receiving touchdowns as a junior. He's also heard from Clemson, Georgia, Miami, North Carolina and North Carolina State. He finished his junior season with 60 catches for 1,107 yards and 18 touchdowns, while amassing 108 total tackles and eight interceptions. He returned four picks for a TD.
  • The U of L staff sent an offer to North Miami Beach wide receiver Steve Ishmael. The 6-foot-2, 170-pound Ishmael also has offers from Miami, Syracuse and Tennessee among others. He had 60 catches for 950 yards and 12 TDs during his junior season.
  • Louisville also jumped in and offered Jacksonville, Fla., Sandalwood High School wide receiver Desean Blair. The 6-foot-3, 185-pound Blair also has offers from Iowa State, Maryland and Vanderbilt among others.
  • U of L offered Stone Mountain, Ga., Stephenson running back Dallas Rivers. The 6-foot-1, 210-pound Rivers also has offers from Boston College, Maryland, Connecticut, West Virginia and Nebraska.
  • The Cardinals extended an offer to Chardon, Ohio, tight end Andrew Gray. The 6-foot-4, 215-pound Gray was named NE Lakes All-District as a junior.
  • The Cardinals have also offered Tampa, Fla., Jesuit tight end Vincent Jackson. The 6-foot-2, 235-pound Jackson also has offers from Miami, USC, Auburn, South Florida and Georgia.
