Surprised in a Good Way

With running back coach Thomas Hammock being proactive in his recruitment, Hyattsville (MD) DeMatha Catholic tailback Taiwan Deal makes an unofficial visit to Wisconsin's camps Wednesday.

Roughly a week after receiving his Wisconsin scholarship offer, Hyattsville (MD) DeMatha Catholic running back Taiwan Deal was standing on the sidelines of Camp Randall watching Wisconsin go through its first outdoor spring practice of the season.

"I was surprised by the visit, but in a good way," Deal told Badger Nation. "I had a lot of fun learning about the program."

Rated a three-star recruit and the No.55 running back in the country by Fox Sports Next, the 6-2, 225-pound Deal made the trip with his parents. Deal was able to tour Wisconsin's new facilities along with meeting the Badgers new coaching staff.

"The coaches took me to different parts of the campus and the facility," said Deal. "I really enjoyed myself and had a great time."

Following practice, Deal spent time on the field talking to running back coach Thomas Hammock, who has been active in Deal's recruitment for the past two months.

"He's a real cool guy and talks about how much they (Wisconsin) like me," said Deal. "We talk almost every day. He's coached a lot of really good running backs (with the Badgers)."

With double-digit scholarship offers, Deal says, along with Wisconsin, he is hearing the most from Boston College, Iowa, Vanderbilt and West Virginia. While he has no other visits planned, Deal says he would like to come back to see the Wisconsin program in the summer or for the spring game.

"I haven't ruled it out," said Deal, referring to another UW visit in just over two weeks.
