This spring, Hal Mumme made a significant impact on the way the Run N' Shoot offense looked in Ford Stadium. Now, he's striving to do the same on the recruiting trail.
Earlier this weekend, SMU passing game coordinator journeyed to West Texas and extended an offer to three-star Abilene Cooper safety Cordell Dorsey.
"Coach Mumme came down to talk to our head coach on Tuesday morning and asked him ‘who is the guy in the back' while we were doing drills," Dorsey said. "My coach told him about me and after watching me in action, he offered. I was really pumped about it since I had been waiting for SMU to offer for a while."
The two conversed for a little while after Dorsey finished his drills and reconnected on Wednesday morning.
"He was really energized about SMU. When we talked this morning, I got to know him a little bit better, and he seems like a pretty laid back guy," Dorsey said. "He said I could really fit in at SMU because of my speed and then he talked to me a little about the academics."
Dorsey also holds offers from Baylor, Oregon State, Texas State, Texas Tech and Washington State. He currently has no favorites because he has yet to make any unofficial visits this spring but says his interest level in SMU is ‘very high.'
"I'm pretty familiar with their program. I don't have a list right now, but SMU would basically be around the top," he said. "Like I said, Coach Mumme talked to me about their academics, and I was really impressed. I plan to visit in June so I can just get a better feel of everything."
Nicknamed ‘Wolverine' for his closing speed and tenacious play, Dorsey is ranked as the No. 36 safety in the Class of 2014. The 6-foot-2, 205-pounder currently plays outside linebacker for Abilene Cooper but says he'll have no problem transitioning to the secondary at the next level.
"I think I can actually play both in college. I know more schools are looking at me at safety, and I would be really comfortable there," Dorsey said. "Whatever I need to do to make a difference in college, I'll do."
