"It was a different experience for me," said Caanan Brown about his scholarship from Virginia, "it was my first offer."
"I can't really form the words. I was happy, I was really happy. I pushed myself on the field and in the weight room to try to get better and it was a relief."
The under the radar recruit from Clearwater, Florida, had a visit from Virginia assistant Vincent Brown. While the UVa assistant originally came to to the high school to scout Caanan Brown's teammate, Justus Reed, Coach Brown came back to the school to offer the 6 foot 3, 235 pound linebacker.
"He liked the way I played," Coach Brown told Caanan. "He came down to watch a practice, so he got to see me and my other friend (Justus Reed) on the field a little, and then one thing lead to the other."
Clearwater Central Catholic's head coach John Davis expects this to be the first of many offers for Brown, telling FOXSportsNext's National Recruiting Analyst Jamie Newberg, "Caanan is long and has that frame. He could be a down guy and put his hand on the ground or could be a 3-4 outside guy or just a defensive end. He's a player with good speed and quickness and he can play in space."
Brown admits he needs to learn more about the Virginia program, but two very important things already stand out about the program.
"I know academically it is a great school," he explains. "I also know that Paul Freedman just recently got drafted, and he went to Clearwater Central Catholic."
Virginia's reputation of putting linebackers into the NFL definitely a draw for Brown. But the Marauders standout is a complete student athlete, boasting a 3.9 GPA, and finding the perfect academic institution is his primary goal.
"I am tittering on the line with something in business, economics or mechanical and electrical engineering."
Brown says he is excited about a potential trip to Charlottesville over the summer.
Virginia is not the only school he is receiving interest from, however. He has been in contact with a lot of IVY league schools including Princeton, Yale and Cornell.
