All Tre Watson had to do was catch one ball. That's what the California coaches wanted to see out of the Corona (Calif.) Centennial running back, and at the Huskies college showcase on Thursday, the saw just that, and a coveted scholarship offer was his.
"On Facebook, I've been interacting with them. They just wanted to see me catch a ball, and they did," Watson smiled. "I feel like I did what I always do: Make plays, show up, be a playmaker. That's what I do."
Last season, Watson rushed 163 times for 1,483 yards and 22 touchdowns, while also throwing in four catches for 23 yards and one TD. He was also one of Centennial's primary kickoff returners, taking back seven kicks for 204 yards, including a 96-yarder.
Watson joins teammate John Plattenburg as 2014 Huskies with offers from the Bears, and, as it was for Plattenburg, the Cal offer is a big deal for Watson, despite the fact that he already had offers from Utah, Washington State, Nevada and BYU under his belt.
"I'm excited about it," Watson said. "I like the way they run their offense, and it's a very good school from academics. That's the most important."
Watson is no stranger to the Bears, as former teammate Garrett Hughes signed with Cal in February.
"Me and Garrett are very close," Watson said. "That's my big homie. We've been talking about it. He wants me to go there."
As for where Watson wants to go, the Bears immediately became contenders with the offer.
"They're at the top, most definitely. They're not at the top -- I don't really have a top top -- but they're up there," Watson said.
As for the new Bear Raid offense, Watson said that it's the "perfect fit," for him, and that running backs coach Pierre Ingram has made a big impression on the 5-foot-10, 185-pounder.
"Coach Ingram, I love him. I love him," Watson said. "He's a funny guy. He reminds me of my coach here, Coach Baz. He has a good personality."
Watson plans on coming to Northern California later in the month for the NFTC event in Oakland, and will use that visit to make a bit of a side trip.
"I haven't been [to Berkeley], but I'm working on going down there in May, before the NIKE camp," he said. "They've seen [me], so let's go make it work."
