Byrum talks Busy Summer, Early Favorites

The safety position is one of critical importance for Syracuse in the 2014 class. One of the most recent prospects to receive an offer is Christian Byrum. He discusses the Orange, a busy summer, early favorites, and more inside.

Syracuse has been looking into Virginia in recent weeks with several offers going out to talented prospects. One of those was Virginia Beach (VA) Tallwood high safety Christian Byrum.

"I think it was last Tuesday," Byrum recalled. "Coach had come down to my school. One of my coaches told me stopped by and wanted to offer me. I talked to him before. Probably a couple weeks before. The week of the 11th he came by. He said they really liked my film and they wanted to check me out with the other coaches so that's what they did."

When Syracuse offered, despite being in contact previously, it was a surprise to the 6-foot-1 safety.

"I didn't expect the offer," Byrum claimed. "Syracuse is a school from up north, and to come down here is kind of surprising. But I really like the offer. I'm pretty interested in going up there either camping or just seeing the campus. I'm going to have to work that out with a couple of my teammates. We're going to a lot of camps together this year."

While Syracuse isn't too far from Byrum, it is enough to wonder if distance would be a factor. He says not only won't it be a huge issue, but the weather difference won't play a role in his decision either.

"Distance might be just a slight factor," Byrum admitted. "But definitely the weather has no factor at all. I like the cold actually. Having players on the roster from down south would definitely make me feel more comfortable. Having some guys there from down here."

Still not close to a final decision, Byrum says a few schools are standing out right now. He has a busy summer ahead which could shed some light on his recruitment.

"I have eleven offers from Wisconsin, N.C. State, Syracuse, Duke, Temple, ECU (East Carolina), ODU (Old Dominion), North Carolina Central, Hampton, Charlotte, and there's one more I can't remember off the top of my head right now," Byrum explained. "Syracuse is one of the big schools to offer. I'd definitely have to consider that as one of the top ones along with Wisconsin, the N.C. State, the Duke ones.

"I'm probably going to make my decision at the beginning of the season or the middle of the season. I plan on visiting North Carolina State within the next two weeks. I'm trying to get up to Wisconsin in the fall or the summer. I'm going down to Miami to try to camp there. Virginia and Virginia Tech are other schools I might visit."
